Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--With its ability to be infinitely repurposed without compromising its quality, aluminum has become the poster child for a circular economy. The process of aluminum recycling entails both environmental benefits and economic efficiency while significantly curbing energy consumption. Carmakers are incorporating increasing amounts of aluminum in their designs, increasing demand for the metal and paving the way for new recycling capacity to be added. Industrial Info is tracking billions of dollars' worth of active U.S. projects involving aluminum recycling in the U.S.

One of the highest-dollar aluminum-recycling projects currently under construction also will contain an integrated aluminum rolling mill. Novelis Incorporated (Atlanta, Georgia) is constructing the recycling center and mill in Bay Minette, Alabama. The recycling facility represents a large increase in capacity for Novelis, which will see its global recycling capacity jump from 74 billion used beverage cans annually to 90 billion. The mill and rolling plant will primarily serve the automotive sector. Engineering, procurement and construction company Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas) is expected to wrap up construction in mid-2025. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Metals & Minerals Project Database can click here for more details.

Expected to wrap up this year is a grassroot aluminum extrusion ingot recycling plant in Cassopolis, Michigan, being constructed by Norsk Hydro ASA (Oslo, Norway). Norsk Hydro will use direct rail service to bring supplies to the plant, which is expected to obtain some of its power from renewable energy sources. The facility will be able to recycle up to 40,000 tons per year, capable of meeting demanding automotive requirements. Subscribers can click here for more information on the project.

Steel Dynamics Incorporated (NASDAQ:STLD) (Fort Wayne, Indiana) is looking to increase aluminum-recycling capacity in both the U.S. and Mexico to support a new rolling mill near Columbus, Mississippi. Construction on the rolling mill started earlier this year and upon completion, which is expected in mid-2025, it will be able to produce 650,000 tons of finished products annually, which will go toward industries including automotive and beverages. Subscribers can click here for more information on the project.

To support the new mill, Steel Dynamics is building two aluminum-recycling facilities, one in the Southwestern U.S. and the other in north-central Mexico. Construction on both facilities could kick off later this year, with the Mexico facility expected to be completed in 2024, followed by the U.S. project. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project reports for the U.S. and Mexico projects.

Other projects involve expanding existing recycling capacity. Spectro Alloys Corporation (Rosemount, Minnesota) is looking to expand its aluminum alloys recycling plant next year. The project would entail construction of a new 90,000-square-foot building next to the existing alloys plant to expand capacity by 100 million pounds per year. The scrap aluminum will be cast into various sheet and billet alloys. The new operation could potentially start up in mid-2025. Subscribers can click here for more details.
