Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A look at Babcock & Wilcox Enterprises Incorporated's (NYSE:BW) (B&W) (Charlotte, North Carolina) 10 highest-valued projects shows it is maintaining a rare balancing act in today's energy industry: providing services for both coal-fired power plants, which are rapidly declining in the West, and facilities with alternative fuel sources, such as waste-to-energy, which are becoming more popular in North America and Europe. But it's the company's role in Chemical Processing projects that makes up a significant portions of its U.S. slate. Industrial Info is tracking $7.45 billion in active projects involving B&W.

AttachmentClick on the image at right to view a graph detailing B&W's presence across four major industries.

Five of the top 10 projects are related to a single complex under construction: Shell Chemical Company's (Houston, Texas) $3.5 billion Franklin ethylene plant in Monaca, Pennsylvania, which would use ethane feedstock from the Marcellus Shale to produce at least 3 billion pounds per year. B&W is performing construction management services for the plant and is working as a consultant on a $250 million natural gas-fired cogeneration unit that will use three turbines to generate 250 megawatts (MW) for the facility. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the ethylene plant and cogen unit.

Shell Chemical, a subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell plc (NYSE:RDS.A) (The Hague, Netherlands), is using the ethylene produced as feedstock for three units for which B&W also is providing construction management services a $500 million gas-phased high-density polyethylene (HDPE) unit and a $500 million slurry HDPE unit, each expected to produce 500,000 tons per year; and a linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) unit, expected to produce 550,000 tons per year. Each is expected to begin construction in the third quarter. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the gas-phased HDPE unit, the slurry HDPE unit and the LLDPE unit.

B&W's highest-valued project outside the U.S. is something that is truly foreign to Americans these days--a new coal-fired power plant. Hebei Zhuozhou Jingyuan Thermal Company Limited's (Baoding, China) $600 million Zhuozhou Dongxianpo coal-fired power plant in Baoding involves the construction of two gangue-fired, circulating fluidized-bed (CFB) boilers to support a pair of steam turbines, with a total output of 700 MW. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

B&W's renewables portfolio also is showing strength. Leslie Kass, the chief executive officer of B&W, noted in a recent earnings-related conference call that construction on three waste-to-energy projects in the U.K. are set to be completed before the second half of the year:
  • Viridor Waste Management Limited's (Somerset, England) $280.6 million Oxwellmains plant in Dunbar, Scotland, which is expected to generate 30 MW from 1,250 tonnes per day of municipal solid waste; see project report
  • Glennmont Partners' (London, England) $224.5 million combined heat and power plant in Port Clarence, England, which is being constructed on a former refinery site and is expected to generate 40 MW from 325,000 tons per year of waste wood; see project report
  • Glennmont's $224.5 million Margam biomass plant in Port Talbot, Wales, which is expected to generate 40 MW from forest products and sawmill waste; see project report
Another U.K. waste-to-energy plant is under construction, but has faced delays and is not expected to wrap up until next March: ACS Group's (Madrid, Spain) Javelin Park plant in Gloucester, England. The 14.5-MW plant, which began construction in mid-2016, will dispose of 190,000 tons per year of municipal solid waste to produce refuse-derived fuel (RDF). For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
