Written by Amir Richani for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Heavy rains and floods in Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul have killed more than 100 people and have left more than 150,000 others homeless, according to news sources. About 1.4 million people have been left without electricity as several power plants have shut down due to the floods.

Industrial Info continues to monitor plants and facilities across Rio Grande do Sul. The following assets have been shut down or impacted:
  • Petrobras stopped operations at its 19,498-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) FCCU (U-3) and associated units from the cracking area at the 188,000-BBL/d Alberto Pasqualini refinery (REFAP). The refinery is currently running at 119,000 BBL/d; see plant profile
  • Unibraspe shut down its 246,200-barrel Esteio Refined Products terminal due to the situation, and no date for restarting operations at the asset has been set; see plant profile
  • Petrobras also ceased operations at the 151,000 barrels Niteroi Refined Product Terminal with no defined date to return to operations; see plant profile
  • Braskem was forced to cease operations at several units at its Triunfo Plant due to weather conditions despite no damage. Activities are expected to resume as soon as the conditions allow, which might be towards the end of the month; see plant profile
  • Oxiteno Industria & Comercio ceased activities at its Methyl Acetone Plant in Triunfo. It is expected to restart operations once the situation permits it, which could be by the end of May; see plant profile
  • Innova also halted several units at its Triunfo plant due to the floods. With the improvement of weather conditions, operations are expected to restart; see plant profile
  • Hexion Quimica do Brasil was forced to shut down its Resins Plant in Montenegro, Rio Grande do Sul, not because it was damaged by the floods but as a preventive measure; see plant profile
  • Coca-Cola and Juices' Porto Alegre plant is completely offline; see plant profile
Below is a list of other affected plants:
Assets operating at normal levels:
  • The Refineria de Petroleo Riograndense S.A., which has a capacity of 14,200 BBL/d, has not been affected by the floods, and it has maintained its operations at 82% capacity; see plant profile
  • Vibra Energia's Canoas Refined Producs Terminal, which has a 405,466-barrel capacity, has not been affected by the floods and is operating normally; see plant profile
  • Odjfell Brasil has maintained normal operations at its 396,200-barrel Rio Grande Petrochemical Products Terminal; see plant profile
  • Petrobras is reporting no impact at its 635,800-barrel Rio Grande Refined Products Terminal, allowing it to operate normally; see plant profile
  • The Campo Bom Glass Containers glass plant, operated by Verallia Brasil in Campo Bom, continues to operate normally; see plant profile
  • Panatlantica's Gravatai Flat Steel Processing plant has maintained normal operations, though employee attendance has been reduced to 40%; see plant profile
  • Coca-Cola's Santa Maria soft drink plant maintains normal operations; see plant profile
Industrial Info will continue to monitor assets across Rio Grande do Sul following the recent disaster.
