Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act was signed into law in 2021 and puts into legislative form Canada's commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Along the way, the country hopes to achieve a 40-45% emissions reduction by 2030. To this end, many companies are edging into Canada's renewable energy sector, especially for wind power. Industrial Info is tracking more than US$1.7 billion in Canadian wind projects currently under construction. Alberta leads the country in both the number and value of these projects.

Among the largest windfarm projects underway in Canada is EDP Renewables' (Madrid, Spain) Sharp Hills Windfarm near Sedalia, Alberta. The first phase of construction began last year and includes erecting 67 turbines to achieve nameplate generation of about 300 megawatts (MW). Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm Borea Construction (Levis, Quebec) is expected to complete Phase I construction later this year, when construction of a second phase, adding more than 50 MW of additional power, would kick off. Completion of Phase II could potentially be in the first half of next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can click here for more details on Phase I construction and click here for more information on Phase II.

Power Corporation of Canada (Montreal, Quebec), a financial services company that has a portfolio of alternative energy investments, leads Canada in the value of windfarms presently under construction, thanks to a few projects from its subsidiary companies. Such projects include a grassroot windfarm in Stirling, Alberta, construction of which began last year. The facility will use 28 Siemens Gamesa (Zamudio, Spain) turbines, each rated at 5 MW, to achieve nameplate generation of 140 MW. Construction is set to be completed by the end of the year. Through its subsidiary Potentia Renewables Incorporated (Toronto, Ontario), Power Corporation of Canada is at work on an even more ambitious wind project near the hamlet of Jenner, Alberta. This development is being built in three phases, all of which are under construction and will add a total 45 turbines to achieve nameplate generation of more than 300 MW. Construction is expected to be completed early next year. Subscribers can click here for related reports.

Borea Construction, which is providing EPC services for the previously discussed Sharp Hills Windfarm, also is at work on a windfarm unit addition project near Oyen, Alberta, for Pattern Renewable Holdings Canada ULC (Toronto). Borea is constructing 37 turbines, each rated at 3.6 MW, to provide more than 133 MW of generation. Construction kicked off last summer and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Not all wind facilities are on such a large scale. The Government of Northwest Territories, for example, is wrapping up construction of a single 3.5-MW turbine near Inuvik. Construction began in January last year but faced delays on multiple fronts, including the delayed completion of a service road and equipment not being delivered in time to begin construction before the region's harsh winter set in. According to a CBC news release, the wind project will reduce Inuvik's use of diesel for power generation by 30%, or 3 million liters a year.
