Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Last week, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (Copenhagen, Denmark) announced that construction has begun on the Buffalo Plains Windfarm in Alberta, which is set to become the largest windfarm in Canada.
The US$875 million Buffalo Plains wind project entails installing 83 Siemens Gamesa (Zamudio, Spain) wind turbines for a nameplate generation capacity of about 515 megawatts (MW). Borea Construction (Quebec) is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services, and the windfarm is expected to be fully operational by December 2024. The project features a power purchase agreement (PPA) to supply Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) with 415 MW of output.

Industrial Info is tracking more than US$2.5 billion in windfarms under construction in Canada. Among the projects is EDP Renewables' (Madrid, Spain) US$510 million Sharp Hills Windfarm near Sedalia, Alberta, with an installed capacity of about 300 MW. Borea Construction is providing EPC services for this project as well and expects to wrap up construction in March. Subscribers can click here for more details.
Also underway is the first phase of Acciona Energy's (Alcobendas) Forty Mile wind project near Bow Island, Alberta. The first phase entails erecting 49 turbines, each rated at 5.7 MW, to achieve nameplate generation of about 280 MW. Construction is expected to wrap up in 2025. A second phase, which would bring the capacity to 400 MW, could begin in 2026. Most of the offtake is designated to oil sands developer Cenovus Energy Incorporated (NYSE:CVE) (Calgary, Alberta), which has a virtual PPA in place for the plant.
Earlier this year, Acciona Energy purchased the project from RES Canada (Montreal, Quebec), a division of RES Group (Kings Langley, England), which is still involved in the windfarm's construction as a developer and EPC provider. Subscribers can learn more by viewing reports on Phase I and Phase II of the renewable energy project.
Industrial Info is tracking windfarms further along in the construction process, such as the Paintearth Windfarm in Alberta, which is expected to begin commercial operations by the end of the year. Paintearth is 75% owned by Potentia Renewables (Toronto, Ontario) and 25% owned by Greengate Power Corporation (Calgary). The 198-MW wind turbine power plant features a PPA with Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) (Redmond, Washington) for a majority of the output. Click here to read the project report.
The most recent data from Statistics Canada, the Canada government's statistics arm, show wind accounted for only about 5% of the country's total electricity in August, although that figure is up from a 4% share in July.
A portion of Canada's federal budget for 2023 aims to promote investment in clean energy projects, providing a 15% investment tax credit for projects to develop renewable resources such as wind, solar, hydro and nuclear power, among others. The budget also provides funding to expand clean power generation via the Canada Infrastructure Bank "as the government's primary financing tool for supporting clean electricity generation, transmission, and storage projects," according to the budget text.
