Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Commercial Metals Company (NYSE:CMC) (CMC) (Irving, Texas) is optimistic about its long-term outlook in North America, with infrastructure-spending programs and investments in large-scale industrial and energy projects driving demand for many of its products. The company is at work on a series of additions and improvements to its "micro mills," facilities that consolidate the many processes involved in steel production. Industrial Info is tracking about $870 million worth of active and planned projects across the U.S. from Commercial Metals, the bulk of which is attributed to steel mill projects in Alabama and West Virginia.

CMC began site preparations last August for its new, $450 million steel micro mill in Martinsburg, West Virginia, which is designed to produce 500,000 tons per year of merchant-bar quality (MBQ) products for the Northeastern, Mid-Atlantic and Midwestern U.S. regions. The company says the addition of more MBQ products to its lineup will give it a stronger hand in addressing long-term structural trends in the U.S. construction market.
"In West Virginia, foundations are nearly complete at the site of our fourth micro mill, and we continue to anticipate an operational start-up in late calendar 2025," the company said in a quarterly earnings-related press release. CMC also is at work on a series of capital improvements at its Mesa 1 and Mesa 2 plants in Mesa, Arizona, in addition to a series of relines on an electric arc furnace at Mesa 1 that produces 354,000 tons per year. All three programs are set to run through early-to-mid December, with the Mesa 1 relines occurring every 12 weeks. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the capital improvements at Mesa 1 and Mesa 2, and Mesa 1's relines.
Earlier this year, CMC completed its Arizona 2 Micro Mill addition at the Mesa complex, which is designed to produce 500,000 tons per year, including 150,000 tons of MBQ products. At full capacity, Arizona will be capable of producing nearly 200 types of MBQs, in addition to a wide range of rebar sizes, according to CMC. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed plant profile and project report.
"We continued to advance the ramp up of our state-of-the-art Arizona 2 plant [in the second quarter], which is the first micro mill in the world capable of producing both rebar and merchant bar-quality product," CMC said in its press release. "A combination of supply discipline and improved seasonal demand has moved rebar markets in the Western U.S. into much better balance."
At its steel rebar mill in Birmingham, Alabama, CMC is proposing to dismantle and demolish an obsolete electric arc furnace and install a new electric arc furnace with a higher production capacity. In February, CMC kicked off a series of repairs and rebuilds on the existing furnace, which are set to wrap up toward the end of the year. Subscribers can learn more from a plant profile and detailed project reports on the ongoing repairs and proposed demolition and installation.
