GALWAY, IRELAND--October 4, 2022--Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--The European Commission (EC) has approved 5.2 billion euro (US$5 billion) to advance 35 projects designed to drive forward the wide-scale rollout of hydrogen in Europe.

This is the second phase of significant hydrogen funding under its Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) programme. Called "IPCEI Hy2Use", 13 Member States will supply the funding--which in turn will unlock an estimated 7 billion euro (US$7.3 billion) in private funding--for the first industrial deployment and construction of relevant infrastructure in the hydrogen value chain. While the initial funding approved in July for the first phase, IPCEI "Hy2Tech", focused on end-users in the mobility sector, Hy2Use focuses on projects and applications for the industrial sector. Europe has doubled its target for hydrogen production to 10 million tonnes per year by 2030. Combined with hydrogen imports of an additional 10 million tonnes a year, it believes it can start replacing gas, coal and oil in transport and heavy industry.

The projects will specifically address:

  • the construction of hydrogen-related infrastructure, notably large-scale electrolysers and transport infrastructure, for the production, storage and transport of renewable and low-carbon hydrogen;
  • the development of innovative and more sustainable technologies for the integration of hydrogen into the industrial processes of multiple sectors, especially those that are more challenging to decarbonise, such as steel, cement and glass.
Several projects are expected to be implemented in the near future, with various large-scale electrolysers expected to be operational by 2024-2026 and many of the innovative technologies deployed by 2026-2027.

Industrial Info is tracking the leading projects, including those that are most advanced, notably the green steel Hybrit Demonstration project in Oxelösund and Gällivare (Sweden). Hybrit, which stands for the Hydrogen Breakthrough Ironmaking Technology Demonstration project, is Europe's leading green iron and steel project which replaces fossil-based technologies with climate-neutral alternatives such as green hydrogen. The pilot plant at Luleå has already produced its first fossil-free sponge iron. The industrial-scale plant at Gällivare will be online by 2030 and will have a total capacity of 2.7 million tonnes of fossil-free sponge iron a year. It will also avoid the emission of 14.3 million tons of CO2 over its first 10 years of operation. European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen said: "Hydrogen can be a game changer for Europe. It is key in diversifying our energy sources and helping us reduce our dependence on Russian gas. We need to bring this niche market to scale. That is why we are creating a Hydrogen Bank. And we will also increase our financial participation in Important Projects of Common European Interest. This will help enabling breakthrough innovation and positive spill-overs for all of the EU economy and help power the economy of the future."

European Commissioner Thierry Breton, in charge of the internal market, added: "Hydrogen is key for the green transition of Europe's energy-intensive industries: it allows us to produce carbon-free steel, cement and chemicals and can replace large quantities of fossil fuels. Europe's industry is a global technology leader in hydrogen. Now is the time to roll out our technologies to Europe's factory floors. Our hydrogen IPCEIs support just that: a first generation of large-scale hydrogen industrial projects in Europe."
