Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Known for its wheat fields and numerous wind turbines, Kansas has a lot more to offer. Industrial Info is tracking $7.8 billion worth of projects under construction in the state. The Industrial Manufacturing Industry leads Kansas in terms of project value, while the Food & Beverage Industry leads in the number of projects underway.
Easily the largest industrial project presently under construction in the state is Panasonic Holdings Corporation's (Osaka, Japan) brownfield electric vehicle (EV) battery-manufacturing plant in De Soto. The 2.74 million-square-foot facility is being built on the site of the former Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant. Upon completion, which is expected in 2025, the facility will ramp up production to 30 gigawatt-hours of batteries per year, increasing Panasonic's global production capacity by more than 60%. The batteries will be used by Tesla Incorporated (NASDAQ:TSLA) (Austin, Texas). And of course, Kansas does, in fact, have windfarms under construction. Wind is responsible for more power generation in Kansas than any other fuel type. Among the windfarms underway is Orsted A/S' (Fredericia, Denmark) Sunflower Windfarm near Marion. Construction began earlier this year and entails erecting 70 turbines, each rated at 2.85 megawatts (MW). Upon completion, which is expected in the summer of 2024, the facility will have a nameplate generating capacity of about 200 MW. The windfarm will be Orsted's fourth in the Southwest Power Pool energy market. Subscribers can click here for more information.
More than $1.9 billion worth of Food & Beverage Industry projects are under construction in Kansas. Hilmar Cheese Company (Hilmar, California) is expanding its reach by opening a cheese and whey production facility near Dodge City. The 600,000-square-foot plant will employ the latest sustainability technologies to help the U.S. dairy sector meet its net-zero emissions goals by 2050. The facility also will be equipped to minimize water use. The project is on track to be completed in the first half of next year. Other Food & Beverage Industry projects include a grassroot soybean processing facility in Cherryvale, in the southeast of the state. As renewable diesel production gains ground in the U.S., the demand for soybean oil to use for feedstock is growing, and Bartlett and Company (Kansas City, Missouri) is expanding in this market with the construction of the Cherryvale plant. Construction kicked off last year. Upon completion, which is expected next summer, the facility will be able to process more than 38 million bushels of soybeans per year, producing soybean meal and refined oil. Oil major Shell plc (NYSE:SHEL) (London, England) has strengthened its commitments to the renewable natural gas (RNG) market in both the U.S. and abroad. Among the company's undertakings in this sector is a grassroot RNG-processing plant at the High Plains Ponderosa Dairy in Plains, Kansas. The project, started in 2021 and nearing completion, entails installing anaerobic digesters to produce 500,000 million British thermal units per year of pipeline-ready RNG from cow manure.
