Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Agriculture is a bedrock of the U.S. economy, not only responsible for feeding for the nation, but also contributing to U.S. exports and used for non-food applications such providing feedstock for alternative fuels. To this end, farm equipment is an important component of the U.S. manufacturing sector, and manufacturers are expanding existing facilities in order to bring more or updated equipment to the marketplace. Industrial Info is tracking $350 million worth of active U.S. projects related to the manufacture of farming equipment.

In Genesee County in western New York, one of the county's most successful and established businesses is moving its headquarters and manufacturing space from Byron a few miles east to Bergen. General contractor Geis Companies (Streetsboro, Ohio) has just broken ground on what will be a 195,000-square-foot building for Oxbo International (Roosendaal, Netherlands). Oxbo manufactures a range of farming equipment, including the only pea-picking combine manufactured in the U.S. According to local media outlet The Batavian, the new facility will allow Oxbo to increase production and hire new employees, with plans to double the employee headcount from the current 140 people over the next five or six years. The new Oxbo facility is expected to be completed next year. One of the largest current U.S. farm equipment projects is expected to be completed in Ankeny, Iowa, later this year. Farming equipment giant Deere & Company (NYSE:DE) (Moline, Illinois) is expanding its Ankeny plant on the Des Moines outskirts by constructing a 139,000-square-foot building addition that will support the expanded production for sprayers. Construction began late last year, but in March this year, Deere announced that it would temporarily lay off workers throughout April and May in the face of reduced equipment sales, which after three years of record demand, are expected to decline in 2024. But that's not stopping Deere from further work at the site. The company has put in a proposal to planners to construct a 20,000-square-foot lab at the site as well. The expanded sprayer facility is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

Another farm equipment company is at work on projects in both Iowa and Kentucky. Osmundson Manufacturing Company (Perry, Iowa) manufactures a wide range of disc blades used in the farming sector as well as for construction projects. Osmundson will expand its existing facility in Perry, Iowa, with a new 20,000-square-foot building addition to increase production capacity. The project is set to take place next year. Osmundson broke ground on a grassroot facility in Hickory, Kentucky, its first in the state, last year. The facility will house two hot production lines and support cold work stations that will produce 20-inch and larger blades. The plant is expected to begin rolling out new blades early next year. Combine harvesters are some of the hardest-working pieces of agricultural machinery and can experience significant wear and tear during the harvesting process. This, in turn, can lead to loss of productivity and efficiency. To combat this, farmers routinely replace parts including feeder housings, augur tubes, transition cones and other components. Last year, Ihle Fabrications LLC (Polk City, Iowa) launched a significant expansion to its Polk City facility, increasing the 43,000-square-foot building by 76,000 square feet. Ilhe manufactures parts for well-known equipment manufacturers such as Deere & Company, Case IH (Racine, Wisconsin) and New Holland (New Holland, Pennsylvania). Parts are expected to begin rolling off the lines of the plant toward the end of this year. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.

In addition to other capital projects in the sector, Industrial Info is tracking more than 60 active maintenance projects set for farm equipment plants in the U.S. Deere & Company leads the nation in these planned projects, with eight planned for this year and next, including a maintenance shutdown later this year at the Ankeny, Iowa, plant, the site of the sprayer expansion. Subscribers can click here for a list of Deere's planned U.S. maintenance projects.
