Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) - The Lincs offshore windfarm has seen its 75th, and final, wind turbine installed 8-kilometers (km) off the coast of Lincolnshire, near Skegness on the east coast of England.

The last 3.6-megawatt (MW) turbine from Siemens brings the generation capacity up to 270 MW and brings an end to the installation work that started in July last year. The windfarm will be capable of producing enough energy annually for approximately 200,000 homes. With the turbines al n place, the commissioning will get underway with the windfarm expected to be fully operational later this year. Lincs is a joint venture between Centrica plc (OTC:CPYYY) (Windsor, England), Denmark's Dong Energy A/S (Fredericia, Denmark) and Siemens Project Ventures, part of German engineering major, Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany). They hold stakes worth 50%, 25% and 25%, respectively.

"We're delighted to have reached this important milestone, which comes as a result of a lot of hard work on all sides," stated Lincs Project Director, Patrick Harnett. "Moving forward we'll be focusing on the commissioning of each of the 3.6MW turbines, getting the wind farm up to full strength and, most importantly, delivering much needed power for the UK's homes and businesses."

The Lincs project was saved last summer when €525 million ($660 million) in crucial finance was raised to finish the project. Ten commercial banks joined forces to provide the necessary financing. Lincs is the fourth windfarm that Dong Energy has a stake in to be finished in 2013, with three located in the U.K.. The final installation at the London Array offshore windfarm, in which Dong holds a 50% stake, was completed in January this year. Its wholly owned Gunfleet Sands demonstration project off the coast of Clacton-on-Sea in Essex was also completed at the start of the year. The company is also working on its 400 MW Anholt offshore windfarm in Denmark, in which it holds a 50% stake. The project is expected to be commissioned at the end of this year and will be capable of generating around 4% of Denmark's electricity.

"We're very pleased to have the last turbine in at Lincs," added Benj Sykes, U.K. Country Manager for Dong Energy Wind Power. "This project is a step towards meeting Dong energy's installed capacity target of 6.5GW across Northern Europe."
