Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Founded in 1960, Gray Construction (Lexington, Kentucky) has grown into one the U.S' top construction firms and is at work on some of the country's biggest projects, including solar panel plants, beverage bottling plants, cattle processing facilities and more.

Some of the biggest projects on which Gray is at work come in large part thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which provides funding to help bring the manufacture of greener energy products such as solar panels and electric vehicle (EV) batteries to the U.S. In early 2023, South Korean solar panel manufacturer Hanwha QCells (Seoul) announced that it would significantly grow its presence in Georgia, with the expansion of an existing plant in Dalton and construction of a grassroot plant in Cartersville, about 40 miles northwest of Atlanta. Construction of one wave of the expansion at the Dalton plant was completed last year, bringing the site's total capacity to 3.1 gigawatts (GW) of panels per year. The current expansion phase will lift production by another 2 GW, resulting in 5.1 GW of total production and making the plant one of the largest solar panel plants in the West.

Construction on the grassroot plant in Cartersville kicked off in early 2023. The project is expected to wrap up toward the end of this year, putting the plant on track to ramp up to its full production capacity of 3.3 GW of panels per year. Other green projects include an EV battery plant in Glendale, Kentucky, which Gray is constructing for BlueOvalSK, a joint venture of Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) (Dearborn, Michigan) and SK Innovation (Seoul). The 4 million-square-foot plant is expected to be completed next year. But Gray's expertise is not limited to green energy projects. The company also is at work on one of the largest food and beverage projects in the Midwest. American Foods Group LLC (Green Bay, Wisconsin) evaluated multiple sites in the U.S. for a new cattle slaughtering and processing facility before settling on Wright City, Missouri, about 50 miles northwest of St. Louis. The 775,000-square-foot facility is expected to begin operations toward the end of this year and will be able to process 2,400 head of cattle per day at full capacity. Components of the facility on which Gray is at work include a harvest floor, carcass chillers, storage coolers, freezer, loading docks and more. American Foods says the facility will create 1,300 jobs in the region. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Food & Beverage Project Database can click here for more information.

Other sizable food and beverage projects on which Gray is at work include a new bottling and warehouse facility in Denver, Colorado, for PepsiCo Incorporated (NASDAQ:PEP) (Harrison, New York). The two-story, 1.2 million-square-foot facility will feature 10 manufacturing lines and associated equipment to produce and store beverages such as Pepsi, Pepsi Zero, Gatorade, Bubly, Propel energy drinks and Muscle Milk. The facility is expected to be completed in the next couple of months, with construction having lasted about a year. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

Gray is expanding another PepsiCo bottling plant in Stone Mountain, Georgia, by constructing a 210,000-square-foot building addition along with another 40,000 square feet of warehouse space, which will bring the facility's production to 65 million cases of beverages per year when completed later this year. Gray has a hand in a few metals and minerals projects, such as Aurubis AG's (Hamburg, Germany) copper recycling and secondary smelting facility in Augusta, Georgia. Construction of the initial portion of the project is expected to be finished in the coming months, resulting in a 380,0000-square-foot plant that will process up to 90,000 tons per year of scrap copper in the form of circuit boards, copper cable and other materials to produce 35,000 tons per year of blister copper. This phase of the project is expected to be completed this summer. Gray already is at work on a second phase of construction, due to be completed about two years after the initial construction ends. This phase will double processing capacity to 180,000 tons per year and boost production to 70,000 tons per year of blister copper. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Metals & Minerals Project Database can learn more by viewing the reports on the grassroot construction and expansion.

Gray is at work on both data centers and fulfillment centers for Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington). Gray is wrapping up a grassroot Amazon fulfillment center in Lansing, Michigan, that is more than 1 million square feet and features 100 loading docks. The company also is at work on Amazon data centers in Boardman, Oregon, and Jerome, Ohio. The larger of these, in Jerome, will undergo multiple phases of construction. Phase I provided a 215,000-square-foot data hall, and Phase II will more or less double this when completed this summer. A third phase of construction is expected to begin soon, which will add the 215,000-square-foot Building C data center facility.
