Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Honda Motor Company Limited (NYSE:HMC) (Tokyo, Japan) said Monday it plans to begin manufacturing electric vehicles (EVs) at its hub in Ohio by yearend. Industrial Info is tracking $4.5 billion worth of project activity attributed to Honda in the U.S., nearly all of which is in Ohio--including the three retooling projects that will allow EV production at its Honda EV Hub to commence.

"The Honda EV Hub provides Honda with the flexibility to produce ICE [internal combustion engine], hybrid-electric and EV models on the same production lines so we can quickly respond to shifting customer needs and market conditions," said Bob Schwyn, senior vice president of Honda Development & Manufacturing of America, LLC, in a press release.

The automaker is retooling three plants in the hub in order to shift into EV production: The Marysville Auto Plant (MAP) and East Liberty Auto Plant will be the company's first two assembly plants to transition to EV production. The plants will be able to build any combination of the powertrains.

Meanwhile, retooling work at the Anna Engines Plant (AEP) will allow Honda to assemble EV battery modules.

The battery modules from the Anna plant will be combined with modules from another plant that is part of the Honda EV Hub: the automaker's joint venture with a subsidiary of LG Chem Limited (Seoul, South Korea), LG Energy Solution Limited (LGES)--an EV battery-manufacturing plant near Jeffersonville. The plant will have an annual capacity of 40 gigawatt-hours, with production scheduled to start by the end of the year. The batteries will exclusively supply Honda's North American facilities to power Honda and Acura EV models. Subscribers can click here for a related project report and click here for a plant profile. The joint venture is exploring subsequent phases that would further boost production.

Honda also on Monday provided sales figures for 2024 for its American Honda subsidiary--which is responsible for selling, marketing and distributing Honda and Acura vehicles in North America. Total annual sales of 1,423,857 units were up 8.8% year over year--with roughly 90% (1,291,490) attributed to the Honda brand; EV and hybrid models accounted for more than a quarter of total Honda sales.

Honda hopes to phase out gasoline-powered vehicles in North America by 2040, and the automaker plans to invest at least $40 billion through 2030 to push hybrid and fully electric vehicles to 40% of its sales by the end of the decade.
