Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. was the leading investment destination for global energy player Iberdrola S.A. (Bilbao, Spain) in the first half of 2024, accounting for about 34% of its roughly $5.73 billion of investments worldwide. The company joins other power-generation developers in responding to the skyrocketing demand from data centers and other heavy energy-consuming projects. Industrial Info is tracking more than $20 billion worth of active and proposed projects from Iberdrola across the U.S., more than 80% of which is attributed to power-generation projects.

Iberdrola said in a recent earnings report that its global portfolio for power purchase agreements (PPAs) increased by 3 terawatt-hours (TWh) over the past year, with new contracts signed in the U.S., the U.K., mainland Europe and Mexico. These include an extension of a long-term PPA between U.S.-based subsidiary Avangrid Incorporated (NYSE:AGR) (Orange, Connecticut) and CPS Energy (San Antonio, Texas), the municipal utility of San Antonio. The agreement covers the purchase of about 161 megawatts (MW) of the energy generated at the Penascal Windfarm in Sarita, Texas, up from the previously agreed 77 MW.

Earlier this month, Avangrid began producing power at its $360 million True North Windfarm in Mart, Texas, about 20 miles east of Waco. The 240-MW project, which is set to be completed toward the end of the year, is contracted to supply energy to the regional operations of Facebook parent Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California). It is expected to become the largest solar power project in Avangrid's portfolio, and the subsidiary's first solar project in Texas.

Iberdrola's renewables portfolio includes a series of developments along the U.S. West Coast, including two projects that will combine solar generation with battery energy-storage systems (BESS): the Bakeoven Solar Plant in Maupin, Oregon, and the Camino Solar Plant in Rosamond, California. Bakeoven's $120 million solar unit is expected to generate 60 MW, while its $185 million BESS unit will carry up to 100 MW; Camino's $60 million solar unit is expected to generate 44 MW, while its $15 million BESS unit will hold as much as 11 MW.
Energy from Bakeoven and Camino will be generated by photovoltaic (PV) panels provided by Canadian Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:CSIQ) (Guelph, Ontario) and LONGi Group (Shaanxi, China). Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Bakeoven solar and BESS projects, and the Camino solar and BESS projects.
Iberdrola's other solar projects on the West Coast include the $170 million Day Break Solar Plant in Antelope, Oregon, which is expected to generate 140 MW from Canadian Solar PV panels. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report.
Iberdrola also is expanding its operations in the Midwest. It recently began construction on what will be its fifth windfarm in the state of Illinois: the $275.4 million Osagrove Flats Windfarm in Dana, roughly halfway between Springfield and Chicago, which will comprise 34 turbines with a total output of 153 MW. Subscribers can learn more from a detailed project report.
"Osagrove Flats is located near four other Avangrid windfarms operating in Illinois," the company said earlier this year in a press release. "When construction is complete, it will bring Avangrid's total installed renewable energy capacity in Illinois to nearly 800 MW."
