The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) (Chicago, Illinois) is underway with two rail projects in the Greater Chicago area that account for about $3.5 billion in total spending. The larger of these is the Red Line extension project, which entails extending the heavy-rail transit Red Line with 5.3 miles of new track and four new stations. Construction kicked off last year and is expected to be completed in 2026. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here for more details.

Another big CTA project underway is the first phase of the Red-Purple Modernization Project, which includes rebuilding four stations with wider platforms, elevators, new track and support structures along a 1.3-mile stretch to improve transit service and add Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility. Walsh Group (Chicago) is providing design-build services on the project, which is expected to be completed in late 2024. Subscribers can click here for the full report.

The data center sector also is showing prominent activity in the state, including from some of the biggest players in the game such as Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) (Redmond, Washington) and Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California). Meta expects to have Phase I of its Project Ventus in De Kalb, which includes two data center buildings totaling 971,000 square feet, completed early next year. Among Microsoft's projects underway in the state is a grassroot data center in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, in the northwestern portion of Greater Chicago. Construction on the 250,000-square-foot building kicked off this summer and is expected to last about a year. Subscribers can click here for more details.

While power development in the U.S. has shifted largely to renewable forms of energy, a few developers are underway with large combined-cycle, natural gas-fired projects. Among these companies is Competitive Power Ventures Incorporated (Silver Spring, Maryland), which is constructing its Three Rivers Energy Center in Grundy County, Illinois. Construction began in 2020 and is expected to be completed next summer. Upon completion, the facility will provide nearly 1,200 megawatts (MW) of power. Kiewit Corporation (Omaha, Nebraska) is providing engineering, procurement and construction services. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Power Project Database can click here for the full report.

But Illinois is not without its wind and solar power projects, either. Approaching completion is Avangrid Incorporated's (NYSE:AGR) (Orange, Connecticut) Midland Windfarm in Kewanee, which will use 25 turbines to achieve a nameplate generating capacity of 100 MW. With more than $1 billion worth of projects underway, the Food & Beverage Industry also features prominently in Illinois' project landscape. Ferrero Group (Alba, Italy) is expanding its confectionary plant in Bloomington, in the state's central region, by constructing a 169,000-square-foot building addition, which will house a new production line for the Kinder Bueno chocolate and wafer bar, which launched in the U.S. in 2019. According to a company press release, the expansion will be one of the largest production lines built by Ferrero outside of Europe. Construction kicked off recently, and the project is expected to last about two years. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Food & Beverage Project Database can click here for the full report.
