Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Earlier this month, Gotion Incorporated announced it plans to construct a $2 billion lithium-ion battery manufacturing plant in Illinois, which is one of $28 billion worth of Industrial Manufacturing Industry projects in the state being tracked by Industrial Info. About 85% of the activity is attributed to the transportation systems and data center sectors.
Gotion's battery-manufacturing plant project in Manteno covers 150 acres in Kankakee County and will focus on the production of lithium-ion battery cells and battery packs for electric vehicles, as well as batteries for energy storage systems. When complete, the facility is expected to produce 10 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery packs and 40 GWh of battery cells per year. Gotion is a subsidiary of Guoxuan Hi-Tech Company Limited (Hefei, China).
According to a joint press release from Gotion and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker (D), production is expected to begin in 2024.
The project will be supported by a total incentive package from the state worth $536 million, part of which ($125 million) will come from the "Invest in Illinois" fund. The fund was signed into law in early 2023, "to make Illinois more attractive when vying for large projects in highly competitive sectors like clean energy," according to the press release.

Pritzker said the project is "the most significant new manufacturing investment in Illinois in decades," adding, "it's the most recent proof that we are in a new paradigm. Illinois is on the rise, and we're open for business."
That sentiment is reflected in the state's active Industrial Manufacturing project activity.
Among the projects under construction is a major undertaking aimed at boosting Chicago's rail transportation: Chicago Transit Authority's $2.3 billion extension of the Red Line, which runs from the city's South Side to downtown. The project will extend the line by adding 5.3 miles of new track and involves constructing four new stations that will serve the new line. Completion is expected in 2026. Also under construction are two data center projects expected to wrap up in fourth-quarter 2023, each of which is attributed to a tech giant. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) (Redmond, Washington) and general contractor Walsh Group (Chicago) expect construction of a grassroot data center in Hoffman Estates, a suburb of Chicago, will wrap up in October. The project involves constructing a 250,000-square-foot building and an electrical substation to increase Microsoft's regional data center capacity. Meanwhile, Facebook parent Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California) is finishing up a Phase II expansion at its data center in DeKalb, which involves constructing three data center buildings totaling approximately 900,000 square feet to enhance global data services. This includes two expansion projects from global data center provider Cloud HQ (Washington, D.C.) at its data center in Mount Prospect, 20 miles northwest of Chicago. The projects are part of a planned 1.7 million-square foot data center campus on a 50-acre site. Phase II and Phase III both involve constructing a two-story, approximately 566,000-square-foot building and 49 generators, to expand regional data center capabilities. Subscribers can read more information on Phase II and Phase III.
Other Industrial Manufacturing sectors, such as heavy manufacturing, also are contributing to Illinois' project activity. In the southeast part of the state, The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) (Arlington, Virginia) is at work on a $200 million expansion of its Mascoutah Defense Aircraft plant. The project entails constructing a 300,000-square-foot building at the existing 50,000-square-foot facility, to produce a military aircraft for the U.S. Navy. The project is expected to be completed in 2024. Subscribers can click here to learn more.
