Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) (Santa Clara, California) said Tuesday it has struck a deal to build chips for Tower Semiconductor (NYSE:TSEM) (Migdal Haemek, Israel) at its manufacturing plant in New Mexico. Industrial Info is tracking six projects worth more than $50 billion from Intel in the U.S., including a major upgrade at the aforementioned plant.

As part of the agreement, Tower Semiconductor will invest up to $300 million to "acquire and own equipment and other fixed assets" at Intel's Fab 11X chip-manufacturing facility in Rio Rancho, New Mexico to expand capacity for 300-millimeter semiconductor wafers, the companies said.

The agreement comes after Intel and Tower Semiconductor announced earlier this month they had scrapped a planned merger after Chinese regulators failed to approve the deal.

The project entails upgrading and modernizing an existing 350,000-square-foot building at the 218-acre complex and installing new production and assembly lines to convert the facility into Intel's global hub for manufacturing chips using its "Foveros" 3-D packaging technology. Subscribers to the GMI Project Database can click here to read a detailed project report.

Industrial Info is tracking three other projects from Intel in the U.S., each of which is under construction with an investment value of more than $1 billion.

The company is adding two semiconductor fabrication (fab) plants at its campus in Chandler, Arizona. Construction on Fab 52 and Fab 62 at its Ocotillo campus, on the southeastern outskirts of Phoenix, kicked off in early 2022. The two new plants will collectively total 670,000 square feet and bring the total number of fabrication plants at the site to six. The project is expected to be completed in late 2024. Also underway is the construction of a grassroot semiconductor fab and grassroot computer-processor fab at its campus in New Albany, Ohio. The semiconductor plant will produce chips for the automotive and electronic device industries in the U.S., and the latter will produce chips for personal computers (PC) and data centers. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the semiconductor and computer-processor fabs. Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm Bechtel Corporation (Reston, Virginia) is expected to wrap up both projects in 2026.
