Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--While Kansas may invoke images of massive wheat fields, the state actually has a great deal of industrial activity occurring within its borders. A large automotive battery-manufacturing project pushes the Industrial Manufacturing Industry into the state's top position regarding spending. This is followed by the Food & Beverage sector.
Industrial Info is tracking only one multibillion-dollar project underway in Kansas, which comes in the form of an electric vehicle battery plant in De Soto, on the western outskirts of Kansas City. Panasonic Energy Company Limited's (Osaka, Japan) plant broke ground in 2023, and the project is expected to begin operating later this year. The plant is being built on the site of a former army ammunition plant. The two-story, 4.7 million-square-foot building will feature four automated production lines to manufacture 30 gigawatt-hours per year of lithium-ion batteries for multiple automakers. The plant will increase Panasonic Energy's battery production by more than 60% when running at full capacity. Paling in size is the next highest-value project, a 660,000-square-foot manufacturing and distribution facility for Heartland Coca-Cola Bottling Company (Lenexa, Kansas). Heartland bottles and distributes a wide array of Coca-Cola products, which include not only the flagship beverage, but also Powerade, AHA sparkling water, Fanta and Sprite. The company is headquartered in Kansas but has other facilities in Missouri and Illinois. Initial construction of the plant in Olathe is set to be completed later this year. The facility will feature four production lines, warehousing and distribution systems, and office space. But the new bottling plant isn't the only Food & Beverage project underway in Olathe, located on the southwestern outskirts of Kansas City. In addition to a pet food distribution center, Olathe also will be home to a new Walmart Incorporated (NYSE:WMT) (Bentonville, Arkansas) beef-processing facility. The plant will package and distribute a selection of Angus cuts from Sustainable Beef LLC (North Nebraska), in which Walmart owns a stake, to serve customers across the Midwest. The facility will take big cuts of beef from Sustainable Beef and turn them into single-serving, case-ready cuts. An NPR article on the plant states, "The facility will handle the kind of work that grocery store butchers do--at factory scale." The plant is expected to be completed in 2026. One of the world's biggest confectionary makers, Mars Incorporated (McLean, Virginia), is set to appease the nation's sweet tooth with the expansion of its candy bar plant in Topeka. Not only will Mars perform upgrades on the existing Snickers line, increasing production of one of the U.S.' favorite candy bars, but also adding new lines to manufacture 3 Musketeers and Milky Way bars. All three candy bars were among the top 10 highest selling candy bars in the U.S. in 2024, with Snickers taking the lead, according to Candy Retailer. Plans for the expansion have been on the table since 2022, but the project didn't break ground until last year. It is expected to be completed this summer. One of the world's largest renewable energy developers, NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida), is expanding its wind power footprint with construction of the Wild Plains wind project in Sumner County. Engineering, procurement and construction firm M.A. Mortenson Company (Minneapolis, Minnesota) broke ground on the windfarm last year. The facility will feature 98 wind turbines across 25,000 acres, providing 300 megawatts of emissions-free generation when completed later this year.
