Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking more than $8 billion worth of industrial projects that are under construction in Alabama. The projects cover a range of industries, including Power, Food & Beverage, and Metals & Minerals. Thanks in large part to a few large power projects, the Power Industry leads the state in terms of the value of projects under construction.
While construction of natural gas-fired power units in the U.S. has declined in frequency as utilities strive to put more renewable energy in their portfolios, Alabama has three natural gas units under construction, accounting for more than $2.25 billion worth of project activity. Alabama Power Company (Birmingham, Alabama) is constructing a 726-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle unit at its James M. Barry power station in Bucks, near Mobile. The facility will include a 435-MW Mitsubishi gas turbine with a heat recovery steam generator and a 291-MW steam turbine. The project kicked off in 2021 and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. About 300 miles to north, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) (Knoxville, Tennessee) is constructing a simple-cycle gas-fired unit at the Colbert power station in Tuscumbia. The unit will use three General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Boston, Massachusetts) combustion turbine-generators to generate 750 MW. The TVA installed its first gas turbines at the Colbert site in 1972, making it the agency's oldest gas-fired plant. The site also had five coal-fired units installed in the 1950s and 1960s. The last of these coal units was idled in 2016, and the coal plant was demolished in 2021. Construction of the new gas-fired turbines began later that year and is expected to be completed early next year. Subscribers can click here for more details.
Nearing completion is PowerSouth Energy Cooperative Incorporated's (Andalusia, Alabama) 680-MW natural gas-fired Charles R. Lowman power station in Leroy, about 60 miles north of Mobile. Subscribers can click here for more details.
Among Alabama's largest projects are phases I and II of The J.M. Smucker Company's (NYSE:SJM) (Orrville, Ohio) Uncrustables frozen sandwich factory in McCalla, near Birmingham. The initial phases of the project include constructing a 900,000+-square-foot building and the installation of production equipment. According to local news media, the facility will help Smucker meet its annual goal of $1 billion in annual net sales of Uncrustables over the next five years. Phase II construction is expected to wrap up in early 2024, when a third phase of construction could begin, potentially adding another 350,000 square feet of production space. A joint venture of Nippon Steel Corporation (Tokyo, Japan) and ArcelorMittal SA (NYSE:MT) (Luxembourg, Luxembourg) is positioning its existing steel mill in Calvert to produce more steel with the addition of an electric arc furnace (EAF) that will produce 1.5 million tons per year of steel slabs. The companies first agreed to the installation of the EAF in 2020, with construction kicking off early the following year. The EAF is expected to begin operating in the first half of 2024.
