Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Steel Dynamics Incorporated (NASDAQ:STLD) (Fort Wayne, Indiana) has taken a step closer toward its emissions-reduction goals. This week, the company signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) for the output of a windfarm to be built in Texas.

Plans for the Canyon Wind project in Scurry County, Texas, have been on the table for more than a decade, but NextEra's recent PPA with Steel Dynamics means the project now has additional impetus for construction to begin. The windfarm will include 48 turbines, each rated between 2 and 4.2 megawatts (MW), to achieve nameplate generation capacity of more than 300 MW. Construction is expected to begin later this year, and the windfarm is expected to begin commercial operations in late 2024. The move will help Steel Dynamics meet its goal of using 30% renewable energy at its mills by 2030 and will allow the company to surpass its interim goal of 10% renewable energy use by 2025.

Steel Dynamics is making other moves on the carbon-reduction front. Near its steel mill in Columbus, Mississippi, for example, the company is adding a biocarbon-production facility. The 160,000-ton-per-year biocarbon plant will provide an alternative to fossil-derived carbon at Steel Dynamics' mills with electric arc furnaces (EAF). The facility is expected to reduce the company's Scope 1 carbon emissions in the steelmaking process by 20-25%. Construction began earlier this year, and the biocarbon facility is expected to be completed by yearend. While the Columbus steel mill will use a significant portion of the biocarbon as a replacement for anthracite in the steelmaking process, another mill with EAFs that could receive the fuel is Steel Dynamics' mill in Sinton, Texas, near Corpus Christi. Steel Dynamics is gearing up for rebuilds and repairs of the mill's EAFs, which occurs after every 600 fires to improve furnace operations. Subscribers can click here for more details.

Schneider Electric Energy and Sustainability Services (Rueil-Malmaison, France) assisted Steel Dynamics in selecting and negotiating the PPA with NextEra. If Schneider was looking specifically for a NextEra renewable energy project in Texas, it had multiple options. NextEra has more than $11 billion worth of active projects planned for the state.

Slightly smaller in power output but expected to begin operations around the same time as the Canyon Windfarm is NextEra's Roadrunner Crossing Windfarm near Cisco, Texas. Construction on the facility is expected to begin toward the end of this year and entails erecting more than 90 turbines to achieve nameplate generation of 254 MW. The project is expected to start generating power by the end of next year. Subscribers can click here for the full report.
