Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Regulators in North Carolina last week gave the green light for the state's first commercial-scale windfarm, which will be built in Chowan County, in the northeast of the state. The project will be built by Apex Clean Energy (Charlottesville, Virginia), which has dozens of other proposed renewable energy projects throughout the U.S. Industrial Info is tracking more than $18.3 billion worth of active Apex projects.

Apex's Timbermill Windfarm is the first windfarm proposal to be approved by North Carolina's Department of Environmental Quality, despite lawmakers opening the doors for windfarms in the state in 2013. According to local news media, Apex has been seeking approval for the windfarm for eight years. While the company still needs to get building permits for the wind turbines, "Initial construction of the project may begin as soon as this summer and will progress throughout 2024," according to Jimmy Merrick, a senior development manager at Apex. The facility will use 45 turbines, each rated at 4.2 megawatts (MW), to achieve a nameplate generating capacity of 189 MW. While North Carolina is inundated with renewable energy projects, the Timbermill project is the only active wind power project tracked by Industrial Info in the state. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can click here for more details on the project.

While North Carolina may be experiencing a dearth of wind power projects, a look at Apex's proposed projects suggests this is not the case for the rest of country. Industrial Info is tracking more than $10.9 billion in active wind projects from Apex, along with more than $6.6 billion in planned solar projects.

Other Apex wind projects include the Downeast Windfarm in Washington County, Maine. Construction is expected to begin in the coming months and involves erecting 30 4.2-MW turbines for a generating capacity of 126 MW. Construction is expected to last a little more than a year. The facility will help Maine achieve its climate goals--some of the most aggressive in New England--of achieving 80% renewable energy in the state's power mix by 2030. Other Apex wind projects set to kick off soon include the first phase of the Long Ridge Windfarm in Millard County, Utah. Phase I will use 50 turbines rated at 1.6 MW each to achieve 80 MW of generation and is expected to be completed toward the end of this year. A planned second phase of construction, which could be completed in the summer of 2024, would double the number of turbines and generation capacity. PacifiCorp (Portland, Oregon) signed a power purchase agreement for all the output of both phases of the windfarm several years ago. Subscribers can click here for the project report on Phase I and click here for the report on Phase II.

Among Apex's other projects planned to begin construction this year is a pair of solar power projects in Ohio. The larger of these, the Springwater solar farm in Madison and Franklin counties, will use approximately 386,400 bifacial solar panels to achieve nameplate generation capacity of 155 MW. The second Ohio project, the Tymotchee solar farm in Wyandot County, will have a capacity of 120 MW. The sites of both solar farms are located near existing high-voltage power lines, limiting the need for new transmission infrastructure. Construction on both facilities is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of this year, taking about a year to complete.
