Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--While not particularly known for being an industrial powerhouse, North Dakota nevertheless is showing more than $4 billion worth of quite varied industrial projects that are presently under construction. These projects span everything from soybean-crushing facilities to cryptocurrency mining centers.
One of the largest undertakings in the state actually consists of three components: a power plant, an associated transmission line and a substation, all in Williston. Plant owner Basin Electric Power Cooperative (Bismarck, North Dakota) started work on the project early last year, employing Burns & McDonnell (Kansas City, Missouri) as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor. The construction (Phase IV for the plant) will boost the existing power plant's generating capacity by 141% through the addition of more than 580 megawatts (MW) off generating capacity from six natural gas-fired reciprocating internal combustion engines and accompanying turbines. The new substation will be built onsite, and work has begun on 12 miles of overhead, 345-kilovolt transmission line to connect the new generation to the grid. Work on all three components is expected to reach its final stages early next year. Another project features prominently in the state's renewable energy sector. Renewable powerhouse NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) earlier this year began work on the Oliver Wind IV project in Oliver and Mercer counties. Oliver Wind IV will feature more than 70 turbines, each rated at more than 2.8 MW, to provide generation of about 202 MW at full power. EPC firm Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) is expected to have the windfarm completed in a little more than a year from now, after beginning construction in the late spring of this year. The new power construction could potentially free up some electrons to go to a power-hungry project a few hundred miles away in Ellendale: the expansion of a cryptocurrency-mining data center. Initial construction of Applied Digital Corporation's (NASDAQ:APLD) (Dallas, Texas) facility occurred fairly quickly, and in March 2023, the operation gained access to 180 MW of power. Applied Digital is now beefing up the operation through the addition of a three-story, 342,000-square-foot building with 100 MW of power with the specific aim of supporting power-intense artificial intelligence workloads. General contractor Century Builders (Fargo, North Dakota) is expected to completed the building early next year. As one of the U.S.' leading states for oil and gas production, North Dakota's Production and Pipeline industries also account for a substantial amount of its project activity. Prominent among projects in these sectors is MDU Resources' (NYSE:MDU) (Bismarck) natural gas pipeline running from North Dakota's Bakken Shale into Minnesota. The North Dakota portion will include 195 miles of 24-inch-diameter pipe to carry up to 600 cubic meters per day of natural gas to the North Dakota-Minnesota border, where the gas will continue its journey to a location on the outskirts of Minneapolis. The pipeline is expected to be completed soon, with construction having lasted a little more than a year after initial delays in getting started as planned. Additional activity in the Pipelines Industry includes several compressor and pump stations being built in the state.
North Dakota's agricultural sector also features prominently, and one of the state's biggest underway projects from this sector is a grassroot soybean-crushing facility in Casselton, about 25 miles west of Fargo. CGB Enterprises Incorporated (Covington, Louisiana) has employed McGough Construction Incorporated (St. Paul, Minnesota) as the general contractor, and it is expected to put the final touches on the plant in the near future. Upon completion, the facility will begin ramping up to its full processing capacity of 45 million bushels of soybeans per year.
