Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Ohio's industrial landscape is quite varied and includes projects ranging from traditional manufacturing to cutting-edge pharmaceutical that are currently under construction. Industrial Info is tracking nearly $20 billion worth of projects underway in the state, with the two largest projects accounting for $2.7 billion of this.

The highest-value project presently underway in the state comes from one of the U.S.' most dynamic sectors: electric vehicles (EVs). Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) (Dearborn, Michigan) is expanding its plant in Avon Lake, known as the Ohio Assembly Plant, with a 750,000-square-foot building addition that will house equipment needed to manufacture an as-yet undisclosed EV for the company's Ford Pro commercial vehicle line, which includes various pickups, vans, cars and SUVs.

In an April update, Ford said that half of the structural steel was erected on the site, concrete walls were going up and masonry was beginning on interior walls. Tool installation is expected to begin next spring, and Ford expects the new vehicle to begin rolling out mid-decade. One other project being tracked in Ohio tops out at more than $1 billion, this time for the power sector. Construction of fossil fuel-burning plants in the U.S. has slowed significantly over the past few years as developers concentrate on renewable energy. However, as renewables become more prominent and account for an increasing share of the generation mix, their intermittent nature of power generation can cause problems. Strong baseload generation from another fuel source can help alleviate some of the ups and downs of renewable generation, and natural gas provides a steady means of generating power consistently.

To this end, Clean Energy Future (Manchester, Massachusetts) is underway with construction of the natural gas-fired Trumbull Energy Center in Lordstown, with Gemma Power Systems LLC (Glastonbury, Connecticut) heading up the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services. The facility will be constructed in a 2-on-1 combined-cycle configuration, using Siemens equipment for the combustion and steam turbine generators. The plant will begin operations in 2026, providing about 950 megawatts (MW) of steady generation to northeastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. But more than natural gas will be providing power in Ohio as a small torrent of renewable energy projects are presently underway. The largest of these comes from the U.S. renewables arm of Electricite de France SA (Paris, France), which began construction of its Fox Squirrel photovoltaic facility in the summer of 2022 in London, Ohio, with Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) heading up the work. When completed later this year, the facility will provide more than 570 MW of power to the central Ohio grid. After the Industrial Manufacturing and Power industries, the Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry rounds out the state's top three industrial spenders, with more than $2.4 billion worth of projects underway. According to its website, the Cleveland Clinic's (Cleveland, Ohio) Epilepsy Center on average performs approximately 350 epilepsy surgeries per year, making its surgical program one of the foremost of its kind in the world. Cleveland Clinic is expanding its research abilities into epilepsy and other neurological disorders with a new building to perform research, consolidating work scattered throughout the main campus into a central location. Construction manager Turner Construction Company (New York, New York) kicked off construction in 2022, starting with demolition of two buildings and an attached parking garage. The new facility will see its first patient in 2026. Subscribers to Industrial Info's GMI Pharmaceutical-Biotech Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.

Food and beverages also play a part in Ohio's industrial landscape with a variety of projects ranging from pet food to breweries. A stable of freezers throughout the U.S. is seeing some action in Wellston as General Mills (NYSE:GIS) (Golden Valley, Minnesota) puts $100 million into a plant responsible for Totino's pizzas and pizza rolls. The expansion will add 30 jobs to the plant when completed later this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Food & Beverage Project Database can click here for more details on the project.

Ohio's data center segment is seeing more than $2.7 billion worth of work presently underway. Leading the charge in this sector is Quality Technology Services (QTS) (Overland Park, Kansas), which is underway with not one but two grassroot data center projects in New Albany, on the northeastern outskirts of Greater Columbus. The Liberty and Justice projects both began this year. Project Liberty includes two 442,500-square-foot data center buildings, each requiring 72 MW of power. Project Justice will have two slightly smaller buildings, each with 320,200 square feet, requiring a combined 78 MW of power. Both QTS facilities are expected to be completed in the first quarter of next year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's GMI Project Database can learn more by viewing the related project reports.
