Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Last week, Canadian Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:CSIQ) (Guelph, Ontario) said it has closed project financing for an Oklahoma solar plant that is under construction. The project is one of $9 billion worth of renewable-generation projects in Oklahoma being tracked by Industrial Info. Nearly $2 billion worth has a medium-to-high probability (70-99%) of moving forward as planned.

Canadian Solar said its wholly owned subsidiary Recurrent Energy LLC has secured $112 million in financing for the 120-megawatt (MW) North Fork Solar Plant in Snyder, Oklahoma, which is expected to be operational in 2024. The company also announced Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority (OMPA), which serves 42 municipally owned electric systems in Oklahoma, will purchase 100% of the energy produced by North Fork Solar under a 15-year agreement. Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) is providing engineering, procurement and construction services for the project.

Among other renewable-generation projects in Oklahoma under construction are two wind projects from TransAlta Corporation (NYSE:TAC) (Calgary, Alberta), both of which are expected to wrap up in 2024: the White Rock East & West Windfarm in Anadarko, which consists of the 201.4-MW White Rock East and 99.45-MW White Rock West facilities, and the Horizon Hill Windfarm near Logan, which will feature a nameplate solar generation capacity of about 200 MW. Both windfarms will utilize turbines from Vestas Wind Systems A/S (Aarhus, Denmark). Subscribers can learn more from Industrial Info's reports on the White Rock and Horizon Hill projects.

The Horizon Hill project has a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) in place to supply Facebook parent Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California) with all of the windfarm's output.

Renewables accounted for 47% of Oklahoma's electricity generation mix in 2022, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), and about 93% of the renewable generation came from wind energy; but other renewable sources contributed, including hydropower and, to a lesser extent, biomass and solar energy. The state ranked third in the nation in electricity generated from wind in 2022, according to the EIA.

The EIA notes the Sooner State had about 11,896 MW of wind capacity in March, as several large wind projects were brought online in 2022 and early 2023--including Invenergy LLC's (Chicago, Illinois) 999-MW Traverse Windfarm in Weatherford. Click here for the project report.

Hydropower also has a presence in Oklahoma's energy mix: The EIA notes many of the state's rivers are dammed to form lakes, and those dams, and the rivers they restrict, are the sites for the state's hydro plants. Industrial Info is tracking two hydro projects from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, both of which entail modernizing turbines: on units 1-4 at the Robert S. Kerr Hydro Powerhouse and units 1 and 2 at the Keystone Hydro Power Station. Both sites are along the Arkansas River. Click here to read more information.
