Among the largest Pharma-Biotech projects underway in North Carolina is one to expand the production of Merck & Company Incorporated's (NYSE:MRK) (Kenilworth, New Jersey) Gardasil vaccine, which helps protect against certain strains of human papillomavirus (HPV). Use of the vaccine has steadily increased since it was approved for medical use in 2006. By 2011, Gardasil had been approved in more than 120 countries, and in 2018, Chinese authorities approved its use, greatly increasing the vaccine's global sales. In Durham, North Carolina, Merck is constructing a two-story, approximately 226,000-square-foot building with production space and equipment for the active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in Gardasil and Gardasil 9. In addition, the utilities center will be expanded. The facility is expected to be completed next year. Research and development facilities also are making a strong showing in the state, such as the construction of a nine-story, 174,000-square-foot medical education building at the University of North Carolina's campus in Chapel Hill. The building will provide for the research and instruction of microbiology, anatomy, physiology and other related disciplines and is expected to be completed next summer. The pet food industry recently has been booming, with more than $4.3 billion in project spending plans in the U.S. alone. Nestle Purina PetCare Company (Saint Louis, Missouri) has become one of the strongest Food & Beverage spenders in the country. In Eden, North Carolina, near the Virginia border, the company is converting a former brewery into a dry dog and cat food production plant. Nestle Purina is aiming for zero environmental impact from company operations by 2030; the Eden facility will incorporate production processes designed to recover and reuse heat and water, and is aiming for zero waste to be sent for disposal. In addition, Nestle Purina is striving to make the facility 100% powered by renewable electricity "in the shortest practical timeframe," according to a company press release. Other large projects in the state include Duke Energy Corporation's (NYSE:DUK) (Charlotte, North Carolina) peak shaver plant in Fairmont, which will use regasified liquefied natural gas (LNG) to fuel power generation at peak times. The facility will have the capacity to store and regasify 1 billion cubic feet of LNG. Construction began in 2019, with Matrix Service Incorporated (Houston, Texas) providing engineering, procurement and construction services, and is in the process of wrapping up. The shipping of consumer products, when not constrained, has been booming since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and rail operator CSX Corporation (NASDAQ:CSX) (Jacksonville, Florida) will later this year begin operations at a new intermodal rail hub in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, about 55 miles east of Raleigh. CSX is aiming to create a major intermodal transportation center in the Southeastern U.S. for container cargo that travels on ships, trains and trucks. The facility will be able to handle 110,000 container moves per year via three wide-span, zero-emission electric cranes. The project kicked off in 2019 but faced some delays when travel restrictions implemented because of COVID-19 prevented engineers from traveling from Europe to assemble the cranes, according to the Rocky Mount Telegram.
