Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--American Electric Power Company Incorporated (NASDAQ:AEP) (AEP) (Columbus, Ohio), Dominion Energy Incorporated (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia) and FirstEnergy Corporation (NYSE:FE) (Akron, Ohio) have joined hands to propose a series of new transmission and distribution (T&D) projects across the PJM Interconnection. Although not yet specified, this would complement a wide swath of projects under development in the PJM region from the three companies. Industrial Info is tracking more than $33 billion worth of active and proposed projects in the area from AEP, Dominion and FirstEnergy, with Dominion's nuclear and offshore-wind projects accounting for about 70% of the planned spending.
The PJM Interconnection covers all of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia, as well as significant portions of Kentucky and Ohio, and small portions of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, North Carolina and Tennessee. "By leveraging the expertise and resources of three industry leaders whose transmission zones border one another, we're better able to develop superior and more cost-effective solutions required to effectively resolve reliability issues across the PJM region," said Ed Baine, the president of Dominion Energy Virginia, in a press release.

Dominion already is proposing a series of T&D buildouts across Virginia, including the multi-phase, seven-mile South Hill project in Mecklenburg County. The company is proposing a pair of parallel lines that would run on a shared right of way, to be connected by four new substations. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can learn more about the lines, including major components and the current schedule, in a detailed project report.
The substations hosting the South Hill lines would be the Raines, Tunstall and Evans Creek facilities in South Hill and the Unity Substation in Kenbridge. Dewberry Engineers Incorporated (Fairfax, Virginia) currently is set to perform engineering services. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Raines, Tunstall, Evans Creek and Unity substations.
Dominion would need more T&D capacity in Virginia if it is to carry out some of its most ambitious power-generation proposals, including a series of small modular reactors (SMR) that would provide the state with nuclear energy. The emerging technology has the support of the Biden administration, which is providing nearly $1 billion in federal funds to back the development of U.S. SMRs. For its part, AEP subsidiary Appalachian Power Company plans to upgrade Virginia's power grid through its proposed Stuart Area Improvement Project in western Virginia, across Carroll, Floyd, Franklin, Henry and Patrick counties. The project comprises 67 miles of new and rebuilt transmission line, as well as a series of new substations. Virginia's State Corporation Commission approved the project in June, and Appalachian Power is now working with landowners along the power line route to discuss next steps. FirstEnergy is currently considering a series of T&D projects across northern Ohio, including the Richland-East Leipsic line rebuild in and around Defiance, which would replace about 16 miles of aging overhead line; five miles of new line from Akron to Cuyahoga Falls; and a new substation in Cuyahoga Falls. FirstEnergy says the project will reinforce the T&D system and allow for "greater operational flexibility and for future load growth." Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Richland-East Leipsic, Akron-to-Cuyahoga Falls and substation projects.
Much of AEP, Dominion and FirstEnergy's investments in the PJM region are geared toward the closure and cleanup of their coal-fired power-generation assets, which gradually have been replaced by natural gas-fired generation. Subscribers can click here for a full list of related project reports.
