Written by Amir Richani for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Brazil's National Electric System Operator (ONS) has released a report suggesting that Brazil could experience investments of 7.6 billion reais (about US$1.2 billion) in power grid projects between 2025 and 2029.
The investments would include the construction of about 1,260 kilometres (782 miles) of new transmission lines and 14,750 megavolts-amperes (MVA) of new transformers in new and existing substations. Overall, 5.8 billion reais (about US$949 million) are expected to be invested in new projects, while the remaining 1.8 billion reais (about US$292 million) would be aimed at previously launched projects.
ONS said it expects 502 projects to be developed nationwide during this period.
The expansion of Brazil's electric grid is key to handling the growth in power generation that the country is experiencing. The government has been promoting the development of renewable technologies such as wind and solar to cope with the nation's growing power demand and reduce its dependency on hydropower and more polluting energy sources.
In 2024, Brazil's power generation capacity was 230 gigawatts (GW), and is expected to increase 9% to 251.5 GW by 2029.
According to ONS, wind power capacity is expected to grow from 32.3 GW, about 14% of the nation's power capacity in 2024, to as much as 35.1 GW by 2028, while solar generation capacity would rise from 16.1 GW to 22.5 GW during the same period.
Meanwhile, the maximum load of the national interconnected system is expected to be 120 GW, 12% more than in 2024.
"In these two years of management, we have led an electricity sector that has been recovering, thanks to the measures that President Lula has authorized us to implement. Brazil is perfecting a robust system that not only meets all national demand but continues to set an example for the world in terms of clean energy generation," said Minister of Mines and Energy Alexandre Silveira.
