Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--RWE AG (Essen, Germany) said Thursday it has commenced construction on a Texas windfarm. The project is one of the $14 billion worth of renewable energy projects in the U.S. from RWE and its subsidiaries being tracked by Industrial Info. About $3.9 billion worth is attributed to projects that have a medium-to-high probability (70-99%) of moving forward as planned.
The 200-megawatt (MW) Montgomery Ranch Windfarm in Foard County, Texas will raise RWE's installed wind capacity in the Lone Star State to 4.3 gigawatts (GW), enough to power more than 1.2 million homes, according to a related press release. The project is expected to wrap up by the end of 2024. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can click here for more details.
RWE said it "continues to grow its operating asset base in the U.S., backed by a project pipeline of more than 24 GW in onshore wind, solar and battery storage which provides for one of the largest development platforms in the country."
Other RWE projects in Texas include a $120 million battery energy storage system (BESS) unit addition at its Bright Arrow Solar Farm in Sulphur Springs, about halfway between Dallas and Texarkana. The BESS will utilize lithium-ion technology to provide 103.5 MW of storage for when the sun isn't shining. Construction is expected to wrap up next month. McCarthy Building Companies (St. Louis, Missouri) is providing engineering, procurement and construction services on the project.
In the early stage of development is the Stoneridge Solar Plant in Milam County, northeast of Austin, which would utilize photovoltaic (PV) solar modules to provide about 200 MW of solar power. Subscribers can read detailed project reports for the Bright Arrow and Stoneridge projects.
Meanwhile, in Fresno County, California, engineering, procurement and construction contractor Blattner Energy Incorporated (Avon, Minnesota) is expected to wrap up construction of RWE's $433 million Fifth Standard solar-plus-storage project, next month. The solar farm will feature 150 MW of solar power, enough to power more than 26,000 homes, and excess energy not sent to the grid will be stored in a 137-MW BESS facility--RWE's largest BESS facility to date. Also underway in California is construction of the 150-MW $160 million Northern Orchard Solar Plant, which sits on 710 acres in Bakersfield. Construction is expected to wrap up in June 2024. Subscribers can read more information on the Fifth Standard and Northern Orchard projects.
Among RWE's onshore wind projects in development is the 200-MW, proposed $225 million Silo Bend Windfarm in Clark County, Wisconsin, which is expected to enter commercial operations in 2026-2027. Click here for the project report.
RWE reported spending 9 billion euro (US$9.7 billion) on growth efforts in the first half of 2023, 6.3 billion euro (US$6.8 billion) of which was attributed to its acquisition of Consolidated Edison Incorporated's (NYSE:ED) (Baltimore, Maryland) clean energy businesses. In another U.S. renewables-related development, RWE announced last month it signed eight long-term, utility-scale power purchase agreements with Dominion Energy Incorporated (NYSE:D) (Richmond, Virginia) for seven solar projects in Virginia totaling more than 300 MW.
