Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Some of the largest industrial projects under construction in the U.S. these days are those involving the production of semiconductors and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Texas is home to many of these projects, helping propel the state to one of the top spots in the nation for its value of industrial project development. Industrial Info is tracking more than $99 billion of projects under construction in Texas.

Among the largest projects underway in the state is Samsung Group's (Suwon, South Korea) semiconductor manufacturing plant in Taylor, northeast of Austin. The project is the first phase of a larger complex that Samsung says eventually will require $25 billion (recently increased from $17 billion) in investment. Presently under construction is a 2.5 million-square-foot manufacturing facility to produce advanced logic chips to be used in applications such as automobiles, artificial intelligence and 5G devices. Construction began in the first half of last year and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2024. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here for the project report.

Other semiconductor fabs going up in the Lone Star State include Texas Instruments Incorporated's (NASDAQ:TXN) (Dallas, Texas) grassroot plant in Sherman, about 60 miles north of Dallas. Two phases of construction are underway that will add 1 million square feet of manufacturing space along with support buildings and ancillary facilities to manufacture 300-millimeter wafers for automobiles and other electronics applications. Phase I and Phase II are expected to be completed in the summer of 2025. Subscribers can click here for the related reports.

While the U.S. Chips and Science Act of 2022 is providing incentives for semiconductor manufacturers to establish plants in the U.S., the global dynamics of the energy sector have shifted with Russia's invasion of Ukraine, making exports of U.S LNG in high demand, especially in European countries trying to wean themselves from Russian gas. LNG developers have been pushing through positive final investment decisions for new plants and plant expansions.

One LNG company growing its Texas footprint is Cheniere Energy Incorporated (Houston, Texas), already the nation's top LNG exporter. Last year, the company began construction on its Corpus Christi Stage 3 project in Texas, which entails the installation of seven production trains to produce 10.5 million tonnes of LNG per year. As with most Cheniere projects, Bechtel Corporation (Reston, Virginia) is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services on the project, which is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Production Project Database can click here for the full report.

Another LNG project under construction on the Texas Gulf Coast is Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) (Irving, Texas) and QatarEnergy's (Doha, Qatar) Golden Pass facility. Three trains are under construction, with the first expected to begin production next year and the third in early 2025. Each train will convert approximately 833 million cubic feet per day of natural gas into 6 million tonnes per year of LNG. Subscribers can click here for the related reports.

These LNG and semiconductor projects account for more than $39 billion in spending, but Texas is home to more than 350 other projects under construction. While the Industrial Manufacturing and Oil & Gas Production industries take the state's top two positions according to project value, respectively, rounding out the top three is the Chemical Processing Industry.

Among the chemical projects being tracked by Industrial Info in Texas is OCI NV's (Amsterdam, Netherlands) blue ammonia project in Beaumont. For ammonia to be designated "blue," it must use a carbon-capture process in its manufacture. EPC contractor Tecnimont USA Incorporated (Houston, Texas) began construction on the facility last summer. Upon completion, expected in 2025, the facility will ramp up to 1.1 million tons per year of ammonia, using carbon capture in the process. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Chemical Processing Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.

Another ammonia plant is being constructed in Texas City by Agrifos Partners LLC, a group of privately owned fertilizer companies. According to the group's website, the facility will have the world's largest single-train ammonia synthesis loop, with a production capacity of about 1.3 million tons per year. The ammonia will be produced from hydrogen and nitrogen feedstock purchased from Air Products and Chemicals Incorporated (NYSE:APD) (Allentown, Pennsylvania). The facility is expected to be completed by the end of this year. Subscribers can click here for more details.
