Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--Norway's Statkraft Energy AS (Oslo, Norway) has received a funding boost of 107 million euro (US$112 million) to build a 200-megawatt (MW) green hydrogen plant in Germany.

Located in Emden in Lower Saxony, the proposed plant received the financial boost from the European Union's (EU's) Innovation Fund. The 200-MW electrolysis plant will be able to supply up to 20,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen annually and a connected 50-MW heat pump system will allow for up to 50,000 megawatt-hours of green heat to be supplied locally. The EU Innovation Fund promotes the development of new technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Europe.

Statkraft has previously announced plans for a 10-MW hydrogen pilot project in Emden. It expects to make an investment decision for the construction of the pilot plant before the end of the year. It will supply hydrogen filling stations in the region. With a capacity of 200 kilograms of green hydrogen per hour based on electricity from renewable energy sources, it will be enough to supply the annual needs of around 100 emission-free trucks. Statkraft already operates a biomass and a gas-fired power plant at its Emden location. Industrial Info is tracking more than 120 active green hydrogen projects in Germany worth almost US$15 billion in investment. "In Emden, we are opening the first chapter of our ambitious hydrogen plans in Germany," said Helge-Jürgen Beil, vice president hydrogen at Statkraft in Germany. "We want to be one of the leading producers of green hydrogen in Germany and are very pleased that we can count on EU funding for this project, which is important for us." The company has signed several letters of intent with potential customers for green hydrogen and green district heating in Emden.

Statkraft's award came as the EU Innovation Fund awarded funding to 85 net-zero projects across Europe. They included 10 clean hydrogen projects, made up of eight green hydrogen projects (Germany, Finland, Belgium, Spain and Denmark), a waste-to-energy plant (Sweden) and one blue hydrogen facility (Belgium). It stated: "The Innovation Fund is fully in line with the Renewable Energy Directive's targets to increase renewable energy sources across Europe. The Fund plays a substantial role in supporting the uptake of RFNBO (renewable fuel of non-biological origin) hydrogen in hard to abate applications in industry and transport. In total, projects selected in this and previous calls will contribute to the yearly production of 631.5 kilotonnes of RFNBO hydrogen. The projects selected in this call alone will deliver 61 kilotonnes annually."
