Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Tenaris (NYSE:TS) (Luxembourg, Luxembourg) showed off its newly completed $1.8 billion seamless steel pipe mill this week in Texas to a group of local, state and federal officials. The facility can produce 600,000 tons per year of oil country tubular goods (OCTG) for the nation's shale plays.

First announced in 2013, construction of the pipe mill began in mid-2014 at the 1,500-acre site in Matagorda County. The 1.2 million-square-foot facility is located near key shale plays and is a "direct response to the resurgence in the U.S. energy industry, and the opportunity to shorten and make the industry more competitive through domestic manufacturing of seamless pipes as a key input for drilling shale wells," Tenaris said in a press statement on Tuesday. OCTG produced at the Bay City facility will be shipped to customer rig sites or stored at Tenaris service centers in Bay City, Freeport, Midland or Oklahoma. In the Southwest market region, which includes Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas, Industrial Info is tracking more than $22 billion in pipeline projects, of which $17 billion are scheduled to start construction in 2018. Epic Y-Grade Pipeline LP, a subsidiary of Epic Pipeline Company LLC, began construction last month on the Epic NGL Pipeline, which will carry y-grade natural gas liquids (NGL) from the Permian Basin and Eagle Ford Shale to refiners, petrochemical companies and export markets along the Texas Gulf Coast. Industrial Info is tracking more than $1 billion in U.S. steel pipe manufacturing projects that are in various stages of development. In Gregory, Texas, TPCO Enterprise Incorporated's (Houston, Texas) $500 million seamless steel pipe mill is nearing the finish line. Construction of the 500,000-ton-per-year melt shop began in early 2015. Jacobs Engineering Group Incorporated (NYSE:JEC) (Dallas, Texas) is the project management consultant. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In Shreveport, Louisiana, Benteler Steel/Tube USA, part of Benteler International AG (Salzburg, Austria), is defining the scope of a $475 million seamless steel tube mill project, which is the second phase of a $975 million program at the site. The first phase of the hot-rolling seamless steel tube mill was completed in 2015. Phase 2 includes an electric arc furnace for producing high quality steel on-site. The finished facility would encompass more than 1.35 million square feet and be capable of producing up to 320,000 tons of steel tubes annually. Construction of Phase 2 could kick off in 2020, but Industrial Info assesses the project as having a low probability of moving forward as planned.
