Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Southeastern U.S. has become a leading hub for industrial development in the nation. Among the states leading the charge is Tennessee, which boasts cutting-edge projects in the automotive, power and defense sectors, among others. Industrial Info is tracking nearly $21 billion worth of projects under construction in the state.

The Y-12 National Security Complex, a uranium-processing facility in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, was built as part of the Manhattan Project in the 1940s for the purpose of manufacturing the U.S.' first atomic bombs. According to engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firm Bechtel Corporation (Reston, Virginia), Y-12's uranium facilities are dated and deteriorating, prompting the National Nuclear Security Administration to launch new projects to create a "modern facility with a design life of at least 50 years to ensure the long-term viability, safety and security of [nuclear defense] capabilities in the United States."

Work to update the facility began in 2018 and is expected to be completed next year. The overall project consists of several pieces, including work on the main processing building and the mechanical electrical building, the addition of a wastewater treatment plant and more. Work on the main processing building includes the construction of a three-level, 242,000-square-foot building to house casting and chemical-recovery processes, as well as a connector to the Highly Enriched Materials Facility. Outside of the Great Lakes region, the Southeast has become a leading location for automotive manufacturing, and the automotive sector accounts for billions of dollars of projects underway in Tennessee, with Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) (Dearborn, Michigan) being one of the primary spenders as it expands production for all-electric versions of its F series of trucks. The company is establishing an EV battery-manufacturing plant and vehicle-assembly plant for the electric F-Series in Stanton, about 50 miles northeast of Memphis.

The facilities are collectively known as Blue Oval City. The battery plant, which is being constructed with joint venture partner SK Innovation (Seoul, South Korea), will supply the truck assembly plant and is expected to produce about 43 gigawatt-hours of batteries per year. Both it and the assembly plant are expected to be completed in 2025. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the reports on the battery plant and vehicle-assembly plant.

In keeping with the automotive projects are a couple of projects involving tire manufacturing. In Morrison, Bridgestone Corporation is expanding its tire plant with an 850,000-square-foot building addition to increase the plant's total size to 2.8 million square feet. General contractor Brasfield & Gorrie LLC (Birmingham, Alabama) launched the addition early last year.

When completed in 2026, the facility will incorporate the latest technologies into the radial truck and bus tires it produces, including radio frequency identification (RFID) tags that better enable tire management and optimization of a fleet's investment in tires. According to Bridgestone, it also will "invest in [artificial intelligence] control technology that increases productivity and the application of knowledge and data in a digital manufacturing environment." Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

About 120 miles away in Clarksville, Hankook Tire and Technology Company Limited (Seongnam, South Korea) also is expanding its tire plant with an 830,000-square-foot building addition. The original construction of the plant was completed in 2017, and since then, the facility has been producing about 5.5 million tires annually. The new building addition will allow the company to boost the facility's production to 11 million tires annually, doubling Hankook's production of passenger car and light truck tires in the U.S. The project is expected to be completed in the first quarter of next year. Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) (Chattanooga, Tennessee) is underway with a couple of projects to increase natural gas-fired power capacity in its home state. In 2023, TVA launched the addition of a 1,450-megawatt (MW) combined-cycle addition at its Cumberland Fossil Plant in Cumberland City. The plant's two existing coal-fired units will be retired in stages, with the first unit going offline by the end of 2026, shortly after the gas-fired plant's completion, and the second coal unit going offline by the end of 2028.

TVA also is adding gas-fired capacity to its Johnsonville Combustion Turbine Plant in New Johnsonville. The plant currently has 20 turbines operating in a single-cycle formation, providing 1,200 MW of power. In 2022, TVA began the process of adding 10 more turbines to provide an additional 500 MW of power. In a nod toward future emissions reduction, the turbines will be capable of firing hydrogen. EPC firm Burns & McDonnell Incorporated (Kansas City, Missouri) is expected to complete the project later this year. Subscribers to the Power Project Database can learn more by viewing the reports on TVA's projects in Cumberland City and New Johnsonville.

Georgia-Pacific LLC (Atlanta, Georgia) is expanding its line of Dixie paperware products with the grassroot construction of a plant in Jackson. Construction on the 900,000-square-foot plant began in 2022, and upon completion, which is expected later this year, the facility will be rolling out paperware such as plates and bowls. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Pulp & Paper Project Database can click here to learn more about the project.

In Kingsport, Accoya USA (Kingsport) and Eastman Chemical Company (Kingsport) have joined forces to create a grassroot wood treatment plant that will produce about 18 million board feet per year of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) from acetylated wood fibers. The project is expected to be completed toward the end of this summer. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.
