Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Over its 122-year history, Turner Construction Company (New York, New York) has become one of the leading domestic contractors in the U.S., particularly for the Industrial Manufacturing and Pharmaceutical-Biotech industries. Industrial Info is tracking projects worth a combined $24.6 billion in which Turner is playing a role.

Many of the projects involving Turner are for cutting-edge technologies and facilities such as lithium-ion battery production, data centers and the newest life-science developments. Among the largest projects presently under construction involving Turner is Panasonic Corporation's (Osaka, Japan) electric vehicle battery-manufacturing plant in De Soto, Kansas. Turner is acting as joint general contractor on the project with Yates Construction (Philadelphia, Mississippi). The facility is being built on the brownfield site of the former Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant, and the project entails constructing a 2.74 million-square-foot plant that will manufacture batteries for Tesla Incorporated (NASDAQ:TSLA) (Austin, Texas). Construction at the 304-acre site kicked off last year and is expected to wind down in early 2025, when the facility will begin ramping up to full production of 30 gigawatt-hours of batteries annually. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Industrial Manufacturing Project Database can click here for more information on the project.

On the other end of the battery life cycle, Turner is at work on a lithium-ion battery-recycling plant for Ascend Elements (Westborough, Massachusetts) in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. The 100,000-square-foot facility will be able to disassemble and shred approximately 56,000 electric vehicle batteries per year. The resulting recycled material will be used to manufacture cathode materials at Ascend's nearby Apex 1 plant, also being constructed by Turner. Both plants are expected to begin operating in 2025. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project reports on the recycling plant and cathode materials facility.

Other notable projects involving Turner including airport expansions and modernizations in San Diego, California, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In San Diego, Turner is underway with a project expected to last several last years in conjunction with general contractor Flatiron Corporation (Broomfield, Colorado). Construction on the project has been underway since 2021. To replace the T1 terminal, Turner is constructing a 1.2 million-square-foot building featuring 30 gates, a dual-level roadway, a 5,200-space parking garage, an expanded airside apron and more. Work on the new terminal is expected to last into 2027. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the project report.

Turner is underway with data center projects for some of the biggest names in the tech world, including Apple Incorporated (NASDAQ:AAPL) (Cupertino, California) and Facebook parent Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California).

In Waukee, Iowa, Turner is heading a group of subcontractors at work on the first phase of a massive data center complex for Apple. Phase I construction includes building a 315,700-square-foot data center building, a 63,300-square-foot office and administration building and a 10,500-square-foot maintenance building. This first phase of construction is expected to wrap up this summer, around the time Phase II is expected to kick off, which will add a similarly sized data center building. Subsequent phases of construction are set to follow, each adding substantially to the facility's size and capabilities, the last of which is expected to wrap up in 2028, although it remains to be seen whether Turner will be awarded contracts for the additional construction. Subscribers can learn more by viewing the related project reports.

Industrial Info also is tracking more than $8 billion worth of Turner's pharmaceutical-biotech projects across the U.S. In the era of COVID-19, mRNA vaccines and one of the developers of the COVID vaccine, Moderna Incorporated (NASDAQ:MRNA) (Cambridge, Massachusetts), became new and much-discussed items on news outlets and in households all over the country. In April last year, Moderna purchased a newly constructed building in Marlborough, Massachusetts, to expand production of its mRNA-based products. Turner is expanding the 140,000-square-foot building by 60,000 square feet and equipping the space with biomanufacturing tools to roll out batches of Moderna's cutting-edge vaccines. The project is expected to be completed later this year. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Pharmaceutical-Biotech Project Database can learn more by viewing the project report.

Other pharma-biotech projects involving Turner include manufacturing facilities and both corporate and university-held research and development facilities. Subscribers can click here to view all of the pharmaceutical-biotech projects in which Turner is playing a role.
