Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. and Canadian natural gas market is looking at some of its strongest conditions in years, as demand remains strong, storage levels remain low, and the war in Ukraine rages. As the U.S. prepares to ship more liquefied natural gas (LNG) to a Europe much in need of it, and chemical processors vie for feedstock to make widely used ingredients for household and other products, gas-processing companies are trying to keep their facilities in the best possible shape. Industrial Info is tracking more than 120 maintenance-related projects in the U.S. and Canadian natural gas-processing sector that are set to kick off in the second quarter.

Hilcorp Energy Company (Houston, Texas), a privately held developer, is preparing to begin work on the second quarter's single highest-valued maintenance project in North America: Central Processing Facility 02 (CPF-2) at its Kuparuk facility in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. CPF-2 processes 260 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas, as well as 50,000 barrels per day (BBL/d) of crude oil. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Oil & Gas Project Database can read more details in a project report.

Although not a household name, Hilcorp has been steadily building its profile in the Alaskan oil and gas markets by acquiring properties from some of the best-known names in the business. Hilcorp became the state's second-largest oil producer in 2020, behind only ConocoPhillips (NYSE:COP) (Houston), when Hilcorp acquired BP plc's (NYSE:BP) (London, England) 26% interest in Prudhoe Bay, as well as its stakes in the Milne Point and Point Thompson fields, according to Alaska Public Media. The $5.6 billion sale came amid crashing commodity prices and suspended drilling, early in the COVID-19 pandemic, but Hilcorp said the deal nearly tripled its Alaskan workforce to more than 1,400 employees; drilling in Prudhoe Bay resumed in the summer of 2021, after prices began to recover.

Through its subsidiary NorthRiver Midstream, Brookfield Infrastructure Partners (NYSE:BIP) (Toronto, Ontario) accounts for the highest amount of scheduled spending on second-quarter maintenance projects of any North American gas-processing company. Most are found in British Columbia, including the Aitken Creek Natural Gas Processing Plant in Peace River, and the Dawson Natural Gas Processing Plant in Dawson Creek. Each facility processes 200 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas. Subscribers can read detailed project reports on the Aitken Creek and Dawson projects.

NorthRiver Midstream was formed in 2018, when Enbridge Incorporated (NYSE:ENB) (Calgary, Alberta) sold its Canadian natural gas gathering and processing business in the Montney, Peace River Arch, Horn River and Liard basins in British Columbia and Alberta to Brookfield, which operated the new businesses under the NorthRiver name. By the end of the following year, NorthRiver had assumed operations of all assets previously held by Enbridge's Canadian midstream business.

Last year, Brookfield acquired Inter Pipeline Limited, which had been Canada's fourth-largest pipeline company, amid tough competition from some of Canada's biggest energy players. Energy Transfer LP (NYSE:ET) (Dallas, Texas) is preparing for maintenance projects at gas-processing plants in two of the most prosperous areas in the U.S.: the Permian Basin and the Haynesville Shale. In the Permian, the company is readying for turnarounds at its Arrowhead Cryogenic Natural Gas Processing Complex in Coyanosa, Texas, and its Red Bluff Cryogenic Natural Gas Processing Plant in Orla, Texas; each facility processes 200 million standard cubic feet per day of natural gas, as well as 89,255 and 20,000 BBL/d of natural gas liquids (NGL), respectively. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Arrowhead and Red Bluff projects.

In the Haynesville Shale, Energy Transfer is preparing for turnarounds at its Beacon Natural Gas Processing Plant in Minden, Louisiana, which processes 115 million standard cubic feet per day, and two trains at its Dubberly Natural Gas Processing Plant in Minden, which process a total 400 million standard cubic feet per day. Subscribers can learn more from Industrial Info's reports on the Beacon and Dubberly plants.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) recently reported natural gas production from the Haynesville Shale hit record highs in the second half of 2021, and has remained "relatively strong" so far this year. Haynesville natural gas production accounted for about 13% of all U.S. dry natural gas production in February, according to the EIA, making it the third-largest shale gas-producing play in the U.S., trailing only the Marcellus Shale and Permian Basin.
