Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The Gulf Coast is showing the strongest demand of any U.S. region for projects to develop and streamline its energy markets, but the U.S. Northeast and New England regions are facing their own challenges, particularly in regards to the Marcellus and Utica shale plays. Industrial Info is tracking nearly $8 billion in active projects that are set to begin construction in the northeastern U.S. regions before the end of the year, including nearly $1.8 billion in the Power Generation and Oil & Gas industries.

The Northeast region includes Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania, and the New England region includes Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Earlier this year, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) estimated that more than 23 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas pipeline capacity would be online in the U.S. Northeast (including Ohio, West Virginia and Virginia) by the end of 2018, up from an estimated 16.7 billion cubic feet per day at the end of 2017 and more than three times the capacity at the end of 2014. Like the Permian Basin in Texas, the Marcellus and Utica shale plays are dealing with a lack of takeaway capacity that threatens to constrain producers.

Among the natural gas pipeline projects in the Marcellus and Utica areas are two compressor stations in southwestern Pennsylvania: EQT Corporation's (NYSE:EQT) (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) $70 million Redhook station in Waynesburg, which is designed to support EQT's seven-mile pipeline to transport 600 million standard cubic feet per day within Greene County, and Williams Partners LP's (NYSE:WPZ) (Tulsa, Oklahoma) $55 million Station 206 in Somerset, which will support the Transcontinental Gas Pipeline's 35-mile segment to transport 400 million standard cubic feet per day from York County to an interconnection in New York State. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Redhook station and Station 206.

Williams also is at work on the Northeast Supply Enhancement Project in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, which includes a $65 million segment from Middlesex County, New Jersey, to the Rockaway Transfer Point offshore New York. The 23.5-mile line also is called the Raritan Bay Loop. The Berkshire Gas Company, a subsidiary of Avangrid (NYSE:AGR) (Orange, Connecticut), is expanding access with a $58 million pipeline from Southwick to Northampton, Connecticut, running 19 miles into areas where natural gas is currently unavailable. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Williams and Berkshire projects.

Small-scale "micro" plants for liquefied natural gas (LNG) are finding a home in the Northeastern regions. Eversource Energy (NYSE:ES) (Boston, Massachusetts) is preparing to begin a four-year, $200 million modernization of its 40-year-old LNG plant in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, with newer equipment, including an LNG peak shaver. The $200 million project is expected to last about four years. "Peak shaving" stores LNG at a facility so that it can be deployed during peak demand spikes.

National Grid plc (NYSE:NGG) (London, England) is adding a $100 million liquefaction unit at its Fields Point Satellite LNG Storage Plant in Providence, Rhode Island. The unit will process 20 million standard cubic feet per day of gas and produce 100,000 gallons per day of LNG. The company says the new unit will replace more than 2,500 truck deliveries each winter. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Hopkinton and Providence projects, and August 31, 2018, article - Micro LNG Projects Progress in U.S..

The U.S. Northeast also is hosting a slew of solar-power project kickoffs, with three set for New York State: Distributed Sun LLC's (Washington, D.C.) $160 million Sun8 Solar Power Plant in Dryden, which is expected to generate 75 megawatts (MW) from photovoltaic (PV) panels, and $35.6 million Turkey Hills Solar Plant in Dryden, which is expected to generate 18 MW from PV modules; and Sustainable Power Group's (Salt Lake City, Utah) (sPower) $40 million solar farm in Calverton, which is expected to generate 20 MW from PV panels. Each is set to wrap up in second-quarter 2019. For more information, see Industrial Info's reports on the Sun8, Turkey Hills and Calverton projects.

NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) is making progress on its $40 million Coolidge Solar Farm in Ludlow, Vermont. The facility is expected to generate 20 MW from 176,000 PV panels. A NextEra representative told The Vermont Journal that initial steps in construction, such as clearing land and delivering equipment, took place over the summer.

Vermont is second only to California in its share of energy generated from solar. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report and October 12, 2018, article - Ten U.S. States Use Wind, Solar for 20% of Energy, with $80 Billion in Related Projects, Says EIA.
