Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking more than $2.4 billion in Alternative Fuels projects that are expected to be completed this year. Of course, not all of these will make it to the 2021 finish line, with late-stage construction carrying over into next year. Projects range from maintenance at fuel pellet plants of a few hundred thousand dollars to a larger, $1 billion+ project.

By far the largest project on track for completion this year is Valero Energy Corporation's (NYSE:VLO) expansion of its renewable diesel production facility in Norco, Louisiana. The project kicked off in 2019 and will increase the facility's production capacity to close to 700 million gallons per year of renewable diesel. The expansion is in the startup phase. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Alternative Fuels Project Database can click here for the project report.

Industrial Info also has tracked more than $10 million of major maintenance turnarounds performed this year at Valero's ethanol and renewable diesel facilities. Subscribers can click here for a list of related project reports.

Other notable projects on track for a 2021 completion include Brightmark LLC's (San Francisco, California) plastics-to-diesel plant in northeast Indiana, which is in the final commissioning stage. The facility will process 100,000 tons per year of plastics into 18 million gallons per year of ultra-low-sulfur diesel. The plant is on track to be at full production capacity by the end of this year or early next year. Subscribers can click here for the project report.

Recently completed projects include Pinnacle Renewable Energy Incorporated's (Richmond, British Columbia) grassroot fuel pellet mill in Demopolis, Alabama, which has a production capacity of 360,000 metric tons of wood pellets per year. According to Made in Alabama, most of Pinnacle's wood pellets go to long-term contracts with utilities in Europe and Asia, which represent an average of 99% of the company's production capacity through 2026. Subscribers can click here for the project report.

As an example of the export possibilities for wood fuel pellets, Enviva LP (Bethesda, Maryland) is wrapping up construction on a grassroot fuel pellets export terminal in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The project entails the construction of two domes that will provide storage capacity for 90,000 metric tons of wood fuel pellets for markets in Europe and Asia. The export facility is being built in conjunction with a grassroot fuel pellet plant in Lucedale, Mississippi, about 40 miles north of Pascagoula. Subscribers can click here for the project report on the export terminal and here for the production plant.
