Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--U.S. shipments of solar modules rose to a record 31.7 million kilowatts in 2022, up 10% from the previous record of 28.8 million kilowatts in 2021, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) latest Annual Photovoltaic Module Shipments Report. The shipments include imports, exports and domestically produced and shipped panels. According to the EIA, about 88% of the shipped panels were imports, primarily from Asia.
However, the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which includes new tax credits for U.S.-made solar products, is expected to boost domestic solar panel production. In early August, clean-energy group American Clean Power Association (ACP) (Washington, D.C.) said it was tracking a jump in solar-manufacturing facility projects since the IRA's passage, although some of those efforts were likely in motion beforehand, and a report earlier this year from Wood Mackenzie (Edinburgh, Scotland) said the legislation could lead to a 78% increase in investments across the U.S. in low-carbon energy. Earlier this month, First Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:FSLR) (Tempe, Arizona), which manufactures photovoltaic (PV) panels and other solar equipment, announced it selected a location for its fifth U.S. manufacturing facility, at the Acadiana Regional Airport in Iberia Parish, Louisiana. The proposed $1.1 billion grassroot solar module manufacturing plant would exclusively manufacture the company's utility-scale Series 7 modules, which have stronger generation and longer lifetimes than previous models. The project is expected to wrap up in the first half of 2026 and will add 3.5 gigawatts (GW) to First Solar's nameplate manufacturing capacity, for a total production capacity of 14 GW in the U.S. and 25 GW globally. These numbers assume First Solar's $1.1 billion thin-film solar module plant in Trinity, Alabama, which started construction in July, is completed as currently scheduled in 2025. Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) (Knoxville, Tennessee) recently announced it had secured 279 megawatts (MW) of thin-film panels from the Trinity plant.
Also underway is Hanwha Q Cells' (Seoul, South Korea) $2 billion solar module-manufacturing plant in Cartersville, Georgia, which is designed to manufacture 3.3 GW worth of panels per year. Q Cells announced that it would build the plant following the passage of the IRA, and construction kicked off in March. Completion is expected toward the end of 2024. Q Cells also is boosting production at one of its existing facilities, with the $200 million expansion of its solar module-manufacturing plant in Dalton, Georgia, about 50 miles north of Cartersville.
