Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Utah has quite a varied industrial sector, and the state boasts projects under construction that range from power plants to production of snack crackers. Industrial Info is tracking more than $11.7 billion worth of projects that are presently under construction in the state.
One of the largest projects presently underway in Utah involves copper production. Copper has become an increasingly important metal because of its use in energy-transition products, including wind turbines and electric vehicles. Rio Tinto (NYSE:RIO) (London, England) is counting on this continued demand growth as it works to extend the production life of its Bingham Canyon copper mine in Salt Lake County. A previous project extended the mine's life into 2027, and the current project will extend this into 2032 by pushing back and deepening a mine wall into a new orebody, as well as performing various upgrades to extend its life and produce an extra 1 million tons of refined copper. The project is expected to wind down toward the end of 2025, positioning the open-pit mine to begin extended and increased production in 2026. Another project is being built with both existing and future emissions reduction in mind. As part of its IPP Renewed project, Intermountain Power Agency (IPA) (Delta, Utah) will retire coal-fired units at its Intermountain Power Plant in Delta and is now in the process of constructing a new unit at the site capable of burning natural gas and hydrogen. The Mitsubishi combined-cycle turbine generator will be designed to burn up to 30% hydrogen when completed next year and will transition to 100% emissions-free green hydrogen by 2045 as the technology improves and the fuel becomes more readily available. The new unit will have a generation capacity of 840 megawatts (MW). In its latest update on the project, IPA reported that installation of the power turbines is about 50% complete and the heat recovery steam generator structure is completed, putting construction on schedule. By the end of this year, another 400 MW of emissions-free generation is expected to begin rolling out from a solar plant presently under construction in Emery County. Last year, rPlus Power, a part of the Gardner Group (Salt Lake City, Utah), began work on its Green River Energy Center, using Sundt Construction Incorporated (Tempe, Arizona) to head up engineering, procurement and construction. The facility will use approximately 1 million solar modules to generate 400 MW, but that's not the end of the story. For times of high demand or when the sun isn't shining, the plant will have a battery energy storage system in place to provide an additional 400 MW of generation. The plant has a power purchase agreement in place with PacifiCorp (Portland, Oregon), which earlier this year agreed to an increase in battery storage capacity to 1,600 megawatt-hours. The Food & Beverage Industry also features heavily in the state's project activity, weighing in with more than $575 million worth of projects underway. Two of these projects are vertically integrated. Starting with the more upstream of these, Utah Flour Milling LLC, a part of PHM Brands (Denver, Colorado), is underway with the first phase of construction of a grassroot flour mill in Richmond, Utah. The mill is being constructed with state-of-the-art equipment that will produce 7,500 hundredweight (750,000 pounds) per day of flour. A planned expansion could kick off next year, after Phase I is complete, which would double production to 15,000 hundredweight per day. Phase I is expected to be completed by the end of this year, and Phase II is planned to go online in late 2026. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Food & Beverage project database can learn more by viewing the reports on the Phase I and Phase II portions of the project.
But that's only part of the story. The mill has a ready-made customer in the form of a nearby baked-goods plant that itself is undergoing an expansion, belonging to Pepperidge Farm Incorporated (Norwalk, Connecticut), maker of cookies, breads and crackers, including the famous Goldfish snack cracker. Goldfish, in fact, feature in the company's expansion of its plant in Richmond. Last summer, the company began adding more than 100,000 square feet to the plant, including more than 73,000 square feet of new production space and 23,000 of warehouse space, as well as additional cold storage and office facilities. The project includes building a new line for Goldfish production. The company said the new line will increase the bakery's output of Goldfish by 50%, allowing it to produce more than 5 million Goldfish per hour--or 1,500 Goldfish every second. The project is expected to be completed this fall. Subscribers can click here to learn more about the project.
