Written by Daniel Graeber for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--A few weeks after the arrival of its inaugural feed gas, Venture Global LNG (Arlington, Virginia) said it shipped its first batch of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from its Plaquemines facility in Louisiana.
The first-ever cargo from Plaquemines was loaded on December 26 onto the Venture Global Bayou, one of nine new vessels in Venture Global's fleet that are designed to transport LNG.
This cargo was shipped to energy company EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG (EnBW) (Karlsruhe, Germany). The shipment came roughly two weeks after data from IIR Energy confirmed the facility began drawing in more than 100 million cubic feet of natural gas per day for liquefaction operations. The facility is fed primarily by the Gator Pipeline, which is tied to two other arteries controlled separately by Kinder Morgan Incorporated (NYSE:KMI) (Houston, Texas) and Enbridge Incorporated (NYSE:ENB) (Calgary, Alberta).

Maria Sanchez, a natural gas products and senior analyst at IIR Energy, reported that deliveries from Tennessee through Gator Express set a new record on December 15 with a volume of 249 million cubic feet per day. That's more than double the previous record.
Venture Global made a final investment decision on Plaquemines in 2022 and federal regulators gave the company permission to introduce natural gas into its export plant in Louisiana in November. With the German delivery, Venture Global said Plaquemines was among the quickest LNG export facilities to go online.
"In just five years, Venture Global has built, produced and launched exports from two large-scale LNG projects, which has never been done before in the history of the industry," Mike Sabel, the chief executive officer at Venture Global, said in a statement.
Its first project is the Calcasieu Pass terminal in Louisiana. Over the seven-day period ending December 18, two of the 25 vessels laden with LNG left from Calcasieu Pass, U.S. Energy Department data show. Subscribers can click here for the plant profile.
The U.S. is the world leader in crude oil and natural gas production, as well as exports of LNG. With Plaquemines, there are now nine LNG export facilities in operation in the United States. The Sabine Pass terminal in Louisiana, operated by Cheniere Energy Incorporated (NYSE:LNG) (Houston, Texas), is the largest by volume, with 4.5 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) in processing capacity.
Once fully operational, the 18-train facility at Plaquemines will be the second-largest LNG export facility in the country, with about 3.3 Bcf/d in processing capacity, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
Outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden, in a court-suspended order, pushed the pause button on new LNG export facilities while the administration looked at their environmental impact. Methane is the main component of natural gas, but it's also a potent greenhouse gas that could be emitted up and down the LNG supply chain.
President-elect Donald Trump has vowed to overturn the order, advocating for more fossil fuels production instead.
Industrial Info data show three facilities--Cheniere's Corpus Christi Stage 3, Golden Pass (a joint venture between QatarEnergy (Doha, Qatar) and Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:XOM) (Spring, Texas)) and Sempra Energy's (NYSE:SRE) (San Diego, California) Port Arthur facility--are under construction with a combined capacity of 5.8 Bcf/d in liquefaction capacity. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the data arm of the DOE, said it expects U.S. LNG exports to increase by 15% from current levels to reach 14 Bcf/d by next year.
