Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In part due its proximity to metropolitan Washington, D.C., Virginia has become a hotspot for data center construction in the U.S. With more than $6.7 billion of data center projects underway there, the state leads the U.S. in the value of these projects. Texas, thanks in large part to two large facilities going up in the city of Temple, follows in a close second position.
Among the largest data center projects under construction in Virginia is a grassroot data center in Sterling, on the northwestern outskirts of D.C. CloudHQ LLC's (San Francisco, California) three-story, 1.4 million-square-foot facility will feature approximately 58 megawatts (MW) of power. General contractor Holder Construction Company (Atlanta, Georgia) kicked off construction in 2022 and is expected to wrap up the project early next year. Other Virginia data center projects that are underway include the first phase of construction of a data center from Digital Realty Trust Incorporated (Austin, Texas) in Manassas. Phase I construction will include a 425,000-square-foot building featuring 48 MW of power. Three planned subsequent phases of construction would add more power and square footage, so that the campus facilities would eventually encompass 1.7 million square feet with 192 MW of power. Just up the road in Ashburn, construction firm Holder is underway with another grassroot data center for CloudHQ. This three-story, 586,000-square-foot facility will feature 96 MW of power. Rowan Digital Infrastructure Limited (Houston, Texas) is wrapping up a data center featuring 200 MW of power. The project kicked off in 2022, with Burns & McDonnell Incorporated (Kansas City, Missouri) providing engineering, procurement and construction services. Facebook parent Meta Platforms Incorporated (NASDAQ:META) (Menlo Park, California) has even bigger plans for Temple, with a hyperscale data center. Construction on the first phase of Meta's Project Pasca kicked off in the summer of 2022 and entails constructing what eventually will be a 900,000-square-foot building complex, including 700,000 square feet for data halls and the remaining space going toward storage, administration and auxiliary buildings.
While this first phase of the project isn't expected to be completed until 2025, Meta already is gearing up for a second phase of construction that could begin by the end of this year. After Texas, Arizona ranks third for the value of data center projects under construction in the U.S. While Meta is contributing to the state with another project, the largest data center project underway in Arizona belongs to Nippon Telegraph And Telephone Corporation (Tokyo, Japan), which, in Mesa, is underway with the second and third phases of construction of what is envisioned as a seven-phase project. The Phase II portion of the project kicked off in the first quarter of this year and entails adding 236,000 square feet of new space. A third portion of construction launched soon after and involves adding a two-story, 165,000-square-foot building. Phase II is expected to be completed by the end of this year, followed by the end of Phase III in first-quarter 2024. The end of the seventh phase of construction is tentatively planned to be completed by the end of 2027 and will bring the size of the complex to 1.5 million square feet.
