Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking more than $15.7 billion worth of industrial projects under construction in Virginia. Thanks in part to large semiconductor and data center projects, the Industrial Manufacturing leads the state in terms of both project count and overall value.

Among the largest projects underway in the state is Micron Technology Incorporated's (Boise, Idaho) expansion of its semiconductor fabrication plant in Manassas. Begun before the CHIPS and Science Act brought tax incentives to establish semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S., general contractor Hoffman Construction Company (Portland, Oregon) started construction in late 2018. The project entails adding a 600,000-square-foot building addition with supporting equipment and systems to increase Micron's manufacture of semiconductor chips for automobiles. The project is expected to be completed toward the end of this year. Another $1 billion-plus project comes in the form of a large data center. Virginia has one of the highest concentrations of data centers in the U.S., and CloudHQ LLC (Washington, D.C.) is helping cement this status by constructing a grassroot data center facility in Sterling, Virginia. The three-story, 1.4 million-square-foot data center building will use 58 megawatts (MW) of power to provide expanded data service in the region. Construction kicked off in 2022 and is expected to be completed early next year. Subscribers can click here for more information.

Another $1 billion project involves one of the world's most popular toys. Lego A/S (Billund, Denmark) is constructing a grassroot campus in Chester, on the southern outskirts of Richmond, to manufacture its popular building bricks and mini-figures. The facility will feature 13 buildings, including processing and packing space and a high-bay warehouse. The campus also will feature a 35- to 40-MW solar farm using both ground-mounted and rooftop solar panels. Construction is expected to be completed in the summer of 2025. Subscribers can click here for more details on the project.

Solar power also is being constructed to energize Virginia's grid. Project examples include Algonquin Power & Utilities Corporation's (NYSE:AQN) (Oakville, Ontario) grassroot Carvers Creek solar farm near Gloucester. Construction kicked off last year and upon completion, which is expected later this year, the facility will use 470,000 solar panels to provide nameplate generation of 150 MW. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Power Project Database can click here for more information.

The Food & Beverage Industry also features prominently in Virginia's project activity. Project examples include Pure Salmon's (Abu Dhabi) grassroot salmon aquaculture facility near Cedar Bluff. Construction on the 165-acre site began in late 2021 and is expected to be completed later this year. According to local news media, it will take two years to bring the fish to market after the eggs are brought in this year. Virtually no U.S. state is without a project or two from Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington), and Virginia has four from the company that are presently underway. Among the largest of these is a robotics-based fulfillment center in Richmond. The project entails constructing a five-story, 2.6 million-square-foot facility with equipment and systems to allow Amazon to sort, package and ship smaller items such as books, electronics and household items. Construction is expected to wrap up later this year. Subscribers can click here for more details.
