Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The areas of Fox Creek and Grand in Alberta, which are home to major light oil and gas production regions, have been evacuated due to massive wildfires in the area. The evacuations have caused shutdowns of drilling and production as well as operations at several natural gas processing plants.
The current fires are unlike the wildfires of 2016, which in northeastern Alberta surrounding the Fort McMurray area and caused the shutdown of more than 1 million barrels per day of oil sands production. The current fires are impacting production from formations such as the Clearwater, the Duvernay and the prolific Montney. Operations at over a dozen companies have been impacted due to the recent wildfires.
Pembina Pipeline Corporation (NYSE:PBA) (Calgary, Alberta) currently has 443 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas processing capacity offline. The Duvernay Complex, west of Fox Creek, Alberta, and the Saturn I and II gas plants at the Saturn Complex north of Hinton, Alberta, are currently shut down. Various supporting pump stations, gathering systems and other related infrastructure in the area are also shut down. Three plants including the Wapiti Gas Plant, KA Plant and K3 Plant, as well as the 20-inch diameter Peace Pipeline system line from Fox Creek, Alberta to Edmonton, Alberta, were temporarily shut down, and have been restarted.
Paramount Resources Limited has shut about 50,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (BOE/d) of production at its operations in the Grande Prairie and Kaybob regions as a precautionary measure, as well as disruptions to third-party infrastructure.
TC Energy Corporation has temporarily ceased two compressor stations on its Nova Gas system that are near the wildfires. The remaining portions of the system and other networks continue to operate normally.
Tidewater Midstream & Infrastructure Limited (Calgary, Canada) has shut its 275-MMSCFD Brazeau River Complex.
Peyto Exploration & Development Corporation (Calgary) has shut down two plants in the Brazeau area representing approximately 270 MMSCFD of capacity.
Cenovus Energy Incorporated (NYSE:CVE) (Calgary) has shut down approximately 85,000 BOE/d of production, primarily dry gas, at the company's Rainbow Lake, Kaybob-Edson, Elmworth-Wapiti and Clearwater operating areas.
Tamarack Valley Energy Limited (Calgary) shut in 300 barrels per day of production when the gas processing plants operated by Tidewater and Keyera Corporation (Calgary) shut down operations due to the fire.
Crescent Point Energy (NYSE:CPG) (Calgary) shut in about 45,000 BOE/d of production in the Kaybob Duvernay region.
NuVista Energy (Calgary) has temporarily shut in and depressured all operations in the Grande Prairie region, impacting approximately 40,000 BOE/d.
Vermilion Energy (NYSE:VET) (Calgary) has temporarily shut in about 30,000 BOE/d of production.
Pipestone Energy (Calgary) operations in the Grande Prairie area are being impacted and about 20,000 BOE/d of production has been curtailed.
Whitecap Resources (Calgary) and Baytex Energy (NYSE:BTE) have shut in production due to the shut-in of third-party infrastructure in west-central and northwest Alberta.
Kiwetinohk Energy Corporation (Calgary) has shut in the majority of its Placid operations in response to downstream third-party interruptions that are near the Alberta wildfires.
Tourmaline Oil Corporation (Calgary) shut down nine South and West Deep Basin gas processing facilities.
The Canadian government-owned Trans Mountain Pipeline is still operating and the company has deployed mitigation measures, including a perimeter sprinkler system at its Edson pump station.
Imports of Canadian natural gas into the United States have been reduced to approximately 6.6 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d) from an average of 7.7 Bcf/d.
Currently, there have not been any reports of significant damage to assets or infrastructure and it is expected that production will be restored once the wildfires are under control.
