Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland) - ABB Limited (NYSE:ABB) (Zurich, Switzerland) has been chosen by the developer of Europe's largest tidal energy project to provide onshore grid connection services.

The company was picked by Atlantis Resources Limited (Edinburgh, Scotland), which took over original developer MeyGen Ltd. (London, England) last October, to provide the onshore grid connection for Phase I of the MeyGen tidal stream project in Scotland's Pentland Firth.

The first 6 megawatt (MW) demonstration phase of the U.K.'s first large-scale tidal array scheme will see four submerged turbines installed in the Inner Pentland Firth just north of Caithness, Scotland. First power is expected in 2016. The initial phase of the project has the potential to generate up to 86 MW of electricity, supplying enough power for 42,000 homes -- or 40% of all the homes in the Scottish Highlands. Over the coming decade, the developer aims to deploy up to 398 MW of offshore tidal stream turbines in the Pentland Firth.

ABB is responsible for the design, engineering, supply and commissioning of the power conversion, switchgear and transformer solution as well as associated civil engineering and cabling works. It will supply products including transformers, medium voltage switchgear and power converters.

"Forming partnerships with the leading players in the energy sector is key to delivering commercial-scale tidal power projects that allow us to harness the untapped potential of global tidal resources," said Tim Cornelius, Chief Executive Officer, Atlantis Resources Ltd. "ABB has clearly demonstrated exceptional expertise in this area and we are confident they will deliver the highest quality results."

The Meygen project was granted planning permission by the Scottish government last September. The Inner Pentland firth is regarded as one of Europe's best tidal resources. Studies by engineers from the University of Edinburgh and University of Oxford indicate the Pentland Firth's tidal stream has ocean currents flowing at 5 metres per second, among the fastest in the British Isles. In March 2013, Meygen and SeaGeneration Wales Limited (Bristol, England), a joint venture between Marine Current Turbines (MCT) (Bristol, England) and project partner RWE npower renewables (Swindon, England), were the big winners in the U.K. government's €23 million ($30 million) fund known as the Marine Energy Array Demonstrator scheme (MEAD). SeaGeneration Wales aims to build Wales' first tidal array project off the north-west coast of Anglesey in 2015.
