Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--Germany's DanTysk offshore windfarm reached a key milestone this week when the last of 80 turbines were installed at the site, located 70 kilometers (km) west of the island of Sylt in the German North Sea.

Project developers Vattenfall AB (Stockholm, Sweden) and German partner, Stadtwerke Munchen GmBH (SWM) (Munich), which control 51% and 49% of the project, respectively, confirmed that all of the 3.6-megawatt (MW) class turbines from Siemens Energy (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) are in place. The project covers an area of 70 square kilometers in the German Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) on the border of Danish territorial waters. It will have a maximum generating capacity of 288 MW, enough to power 350,000 homes. Originally, the windfarm was meant to have a capacity of 400 MW before being downsized in recent years.

The news that DanTysk is close to full commissioning comes just weeks after both firms committed to spending 1.2 billion euros ($1.6 billion) to construct their second offshore windfarm in the German North Sea, the 288-MW Sandbank project, located northwest of DanTysk. Construction of Sandbank is expected to begin next summer and will use 72 Siemens SWT-4.0-130 model turbines, rated at 4 MW each. For additional information, see August 15, 2014, article--Vattenfall Commits to €1.2 Billion German Offshore Windfarm.

"We are delighted that the 80 wind turbines in the DanTysk offshore windfarm could be set up so quickly," commented Gunnar Groebler, head of the Renewables Business Unit for Vattenfall's Continental/UK region. "Additionally particularly positive is that the inter array cable installation between the turbines and the offshore substation went smoothly."

Christian Vogt, head of Corporate Investment Management at Stadtwerke München, added: "The erection of the last turbine in the DanTysk project could be completed as scheduled and is an important step on the way to the implementing of the whole windfarm. The successful construction progress on this project allows us to look forward to the next joint project "Sandbank" from SWM and Vattenfall, which will be placed in the same neighborhood."

In June 2014, there was 628 MW of offshore wind capacity connected to the German grid. By 2030, the government wants the figure to stand at 15,000 MW. There is around 2,400 MW of offshore windfarms currently under construction, while another 9,000 MW of projects have received the green light.
