Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--Newly formed wind turbine giant Siemens-Gamesa (Madrid, Spain) is to replace Adwen (Bremen, Germany) as the sole turbine supplier for two French offshore windfarms with a combined generating capacity of almost 1,000 megawatts (MW).

The company will supply its new 8-MW D8 model turbines for two projects off the French coast--Dieppe-Le Tréport and Yeu-Noirmoutier--both with generating capacities of 496 MW. Each project will need 62 turbines and produce an estimated 2,000 gigawatt hours (GWh) per year, enough to supply roughly 500,000 households. The Siemens D8 replaces the proposed 8-MW AD8 model from Adwen.

Siemens-Gamesa was created earlier this year by the merger of Spanish renewable energy major Gamesa Corporation Technology S.A. (Zamudio, Spain) and the wind energy business of Germany's Siemens AG (Munich, Germany). At the time of the merger, Gamesa already owned Adwen. The company claimed that it wants to focus its research and development (R&D) and production resources on just one 8-MW turbine and will discontinue Adwen's AD8. The change has been approved by the French Minister for the Ecological and Inclusive Transition after review by the Energy Regulation Commission (CRE). Siemens-Gamesa is also planning to replace the Adwen AD8 for another 496-MW offshore windfarm being developed by Ailes Marines in the bay of Saint-Brieuc, which is awaiting approval by the government.

"This decision is a crucial milestone for the French offshore wind industry," explained Michael Hannibal, Siemens Gamesa chief executive officer for offshore. "Siemens Gamesa will deliver the most popular offshore wind platform and will bring its unmatched experience working in offshore projects. I am convinced this will help the industry take-off and I am happy to see that all parties involved, including our customers and the French State, acknowledge the benefits of installing the D8 in these projects."

The company claimed the decision will not affect Adwen's plans to build two factories in the port of Le Havre, one for nacelles and one for blades.

France, which relies on nuclear power for three quarters of its power, has started to develop its offshore wind sector as it plans to reduce its nuclear reliance to 50% in the coming decade. Since 2012, there have been two offshore wind tenders calling for the construction of six windfarms with a combined generating capacity of 3 gigawatts (GW) by 2020. A third offshore tender process for the Dunkirk region off the northern coast of the country is planned.
