Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Cheniere Energy Incorporated (NYSE:LNG) (Houston, Texas) is underway with the construction of three liquefied natural gas (LNG) trains at its Gulf Coast facilities and is already planning for more. Industrial Info is tracking more than $35 billion in active Cheniere projects.
The first four trains at the Sabine Pass facility in Louisiana have been completed, with a fifth under construction. At the company's site in Corpus Christi, Texas, two trains are under construction, and Train 3 has all necessary regulatory approvals in place.
Cheniere's Train 4 at Sabine Pass was substantially completed during the just-ended third quarter. For more information, see October 11, 2017, article - FERC Clears Cheniere's Sabine Pass Train 4 for Exports. In an earnings conference call, Chief Executive Officer Jack Fusco said Sabine Pass Train 5 is 76.1% complete, and Corpus Christi trains 1 and 2 are 72.4% complete. Construction of the 4.5 million-metric-ton-per year Train 5 at Sabine Pass kicked off in mid-2015, with completion expected next summer. The train will bring the total Sabine Pass site production to 22.5 million metric tons per year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Corpus Christi trains 1 and 2 will each have a production capacity of 4.5 million metric tons per year and are expected to be completed in the third quarter of next year. Construction began in mid-2015. Bechtel Group Incorporated is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) on both the Sabine Pass and Corpus Christi projects. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Corpus Christi Train 1 and Train 2. When the three trains are complete, Cheniere will have a total liquefaction capacity of 31.5 million metric tons per year.
Even as Cheniere nears completion of these projects, it is keeping an eye to the future for more growth. "The second phase of Cheniere's growth is two additional trains: Corpus Train 3, Sabine Train 6, with an additional liquefaction capacity of 9 million tons per annum," said Fusco. "These trains are fully permitted and ready to move forward on commercialization and financing."
"We expect to soon file with FERC to begin some early stage construction work on Corpus Christi Train 3 in anticipation of completing the remaining steps to reach FID [final investment decision] on that project," said Fusco.
Construction on both Train 3 at Corpus Christi and Train 6 at Sabine Pass could kick off next year, taking about three years to complete. The projects have a combined total investment value of $5.5 billion. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on Corpus Christi Train 3 and Sabine Pass Train 6.
The growth is only set to continue. "We believe we have sufficient land at our existing sites to double our total liquefaction capacity, and we have multiple technological options in our toolkit," said Fusco.
Cheniere reported that revenues had increased $938 million during the third quarter of the year, primarily due to the increased volumes of LNG being sold. The company had three trains operating in the just-passed quarter, compared with only one in third-quarter 2016. As part of President Donald Trump's recent visit to Asia, last week Cheniere signed a memorandum of understanding with China National Petroleum Corporation for long-term LNG sales. The company reports that as of October 31, more than 210 LNG cargoes have been exported from Sabine Pass, with deliveries completed to 25 countries.
