Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--Sweden's premier refiner Preem AB (Stockholm, Sweden) and national energy company Vattenfall (Stockholm) have teamed up to build Europe's largest hydrogen fuel production plant.

Located at Preem's refinery on the island of Hisingen outside the city of Gothenburg, the water electrolysis plant will have a generating capacity of 20 megawatts (MW), which the partner's claimed would be "Europe's largest water electrolysis plant for the refinery sector." The plant will be used to power increased production of biofuels.

Industrial Info is tracking a number of groundbreaking projects looking to use hydrogen as a fuel in the steel-making and refining sectors. These include the world's first project for creating fossil-free steel with the HYBRIT initiative at the Lulea Steel Works in northern Sweden and a proposed project by ArcelorMittal S.A. (NYSE:MT) (Luxembourg) to build a hydrogen-based pilot project at its Hamburg steel plant in Germany "in the coming years." For additional information, see May 14, 2019, article--World's First Hydrogen-based Steel Project Moves Forward.

Preem is the largest fuel company in Sweden with two refineries with a combined capacity of more than 18 million cubic meters of crude oil per year. The hydrogen plant will play a key role in the company's goal of 3 million cubic metres of renewable fuel by 2030. The Hisingen refinery has a capacity of 125,800 barrels per day (BBL/d), and the company is constructing a new a Green Feed Unit (GFU), which will produce approximately 1 million cubic meters of renewable diesel and renewable aviation fuel each year. The water electrolysis plant will be a part of this development, capable of producing 3,800 cubic metres (m3) of hydrogen per hour and powered by renewable energy.

Preem's Chief Executive Officer Petter Holland said: "Hydrogen is an important component in our production of renewable fuels, but supplies of fossil-free hydrogen are low. The partnership with Vattenfall allows us to produce fossil-free hydrogen using electrolysis, which will increase the renewability of our fuels by a few more percent. The plant maximises the currently available grid capacity, which needs to be expanded to reach its full potential."

"Partnerships with Preem and Swedish industry are crucial if we are to achieve success in the most important issue of our time: meeting the climate challenge," added Vattenfall's President and Chief Executive Officer Magnus Hall. "The new agreement deepens, reinforces and broadens the partnership. It gives us the potential to produce fossil-free fuel on a large scale."

Sweden's target is to cut carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the transport sector by 70% between now and 2030, which will call for a sharp increase in the production of renewable fuels. By being able to produce 1 million cubic meters of renewable diesel and renewable aviation fuel at Hisengen, the new plant will supply about 25% Sweden's estimated need for renewable fuels by 2030.
