Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info is tracking $4.4 billion in Power Industry project starts that are set to take place in the U.S. Great Lakes market region in fourth-quarter 2019. The region includes Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. Ohio, with more than $2.7 billion in planned project starts, leads the region in terms of project value, followed by Illinois, with $719.3 million.

Ohio shines in terms of project value because of two large, grassroot natural gas-fired projects. In Byesville, Ohio, about 80 miles east of Columbus, Apex Power Group LLC (Mooresville, Indiana) is gearing up to begin construction on its Guernsey Power Station. The 1,650-megawatt (MW) facility will use General Electric (NYSE:GE) equipment. Gemma Power Systems LLC (Glastonbury, Connecticut) is providing engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) on the project, which has an estimated total investment value (TIV) of $1.49 billion. Construction is set to wrap up in early 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Also taking advantage of the prolific natural gas from the Utica Shale, EmberClear Corporation (Houston, Texas) plans to begin construction on a 1,050-MW combined-cycle plant on a 60-acre site near Cadiz, Ohio. Gemma Power Systems also is providing EPC on the $1 billion project, which is expected to kick off early in the fourth quarter and be completed in the summer of 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Renewable energy also features prominently in the area's fourth-quarter project activity. In Illinois, Capital Power Corporation (Boston, Massachusetts) is developing the 150-MW Cardinal Point Windfarm near Sciota, in the west of the state. The windfarm will feature 60 General Electric 2.5-MW wind turbine generators. Black & Veatch Incorporated (Overland Park, Kansas) is providing EPC. The project has an estimated TIV of $247.5 million. The project is expected to wrap up in mid-2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Among the planned solar power projects in the region is NextEra Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) 150-MW Two Creeks photovoltaic plant in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin, near Lake Michigan. The facility is being built on 1,815 acres and will feature 440,000 thin-film photovoltaic modules. The facility also is planned to have a battery energy storage system (BESS). The project is expected to take about a year to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Another solar+battery facility is being developed by Invenergy (Chicago, Illinois) in Wisconsin. The company plans to kick off construction of its 300-MW Badger Hollow solar power plant soon, followed by a 50-MW BESS using lithium-ion batteries. The battery system is expected to be completed by the end of next year, followed by the solar facility in 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the solar farm and BESS.
As the summer power season draws to a close, Industrial Info also is tracking several planned maintenance projects in the region, including two nuclear refueling outages, both for Exelon Corporation (NYSE:EXC) (Chicago) plants in Illinois. The refueling of the 1,1940-MW Unit 1 at the Braidwood Nuclear Power Station in Braceville and the 867-MW Unit 2 at the Dresden Nuclear Power Station in Morris are both planned to kick off in October and take 20 and 18 days, respectively, to complete. The projects have a combined TIV of $51 million. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the refueling outages at the Braidwood and Dresden plants.
