Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--Construction has started on Unit 3 of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant, part of Turkey's first nuclear facility.

Joining the ceremony via videoconference, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan watched the pouring of the first concrete into the foundation of Unit 3. The $22 billion Akkuyu project is being completely funded by Russia's state-owned nuclear power major Rosatom Corporation (Moscow, Russia), which will operate the plant when the project is completed.

The four-unit plant, which will boast four VVER1200 reactors with a combined generating capacity of 4,800 megawatts (MW), is located on southern Turkey's Mediterranean coast. It is expected to meet roughly 10% of Turkey's electricity needs. Industrial Info is tracking all of the key projects.

According to Anastasia Zoteeva, chief executive officer of Akkuyu Nükleer AS, the company will commission one reactor per year between 2023 and 2026. She said that work has progressed steadily, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We received four steam generators last year for our first unit, and it's going to be built this year," Zoteeva said. "So everything's going well. Our manufacturers in Russia never stopped production during the pandemic, and they were able to do everything to meet the project's schedule. Likewise, the manufacturers of the turbine islands are continuing their work in France, and we plan to collect those in August. There are 8,000 people working at the construction site, and 80% of them are Turkish citizens. This will rise to about 12,000 during the peak of construction .When the plant enters operation, about 4,000 people will work there."

"Construction and commissioning of the plant will provide 10% of Turkey's electricity needs," added Fatih Dönmez, Turkey's Minister of Energy and Natural Resources. "It is also an important contribution to the preservation of our ecology: nuclear power plants are a source of environmentally friendly and uninterrupted electricity. The project is a driver for the development of industry, economy and employment, and also contributes to the development of many related industries."

The latest work on Unit 3 will see concrete being poured onto the reinforced base of the power unit, which is divided into 16 sections. Concrete pouring at each section will be carried out round the clock and a technical shelter will protect the site from precipitation. Concrete will be poured to a height of 2.6 meters. About 17,000 cubic meters of concrete mixture will be poured into the foundation slab.

In related news, the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) for Unit 1 was delivered to the site in recent weeks. The RPV, which took three years to manufacture, weighs 330 tonnes, has a 4.5 meter diameter and is 12 meters high.
