Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Cyclone Tauktae made landfall in Western India on Monday, disrupting power distribution systems for many states including Gujarat, Goa, Maharashtra Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. While damage to electrical distribution is widespread, damage to power generating units, which were taken offline, has been limited so far. Only two coal power units totaling 500 megawatts (MWs) have been identified as offline as a direct result of the storm. These units were taken offline as a precaution and are expected to restart quickly once the storm has passed.

No petroleum refineries or large petrochemical plants were in the storm's path; however, more than 274 industrial plants were in the storm's most intense wind cone. Flooding in low-lying areas has forced the evacuation of an estimated 150,000 people.

Perhaps the most tragic impact of the storm is the loss of power in hospitals that are at maximum capacity due to COVID-19. State electricity boards confirm that crews are working around the clock to restore power as quickly as possible.

Industrial Info's researchers continue to monitor the storm's progress and report on plant closures in the Disaster Impact Tracker tool as they are confirmed. For more information on the Disaster Impact Tracker, click here.
