Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The scrap metals recycling sector is critical in transforming post-production scrap into fresh material to be further utilized. Scrap metal recycling is seen as better for the environment: as more recycled material is used, it serves to increase energy efficiency and lower CO2 emissions.

As a part of Salzgitter AG's (Salzgitter, Germany) 2030 strategy, the steel producer is expanding its scrap recycling activities by more than 50% to more than 3 million tons per year.

Aluminium Norf GmbH (Neuss, Germany), one of the largest aluminum smelting and rolling mills in Europe, is expanding its recycling center with a third recycling furnace. A total of 150,000 tons of painted production scrap can be melted down at the company's Norf plant, reducing CO2 emissions by 415,000 tons per year.

Aurubis AG, (Hamburg, Germany) Europe's largest copper producer, is planning to build a 70 million euro (US$76 million) recycling plant in Belgium to increase production of recycled nickel along with copper by constructing an energy-efficient bleed treatment facility at its Olen site. The facility will recover valuable metals contained in electrolyte streams.
